Crunch Time - The Fall Run

We are now starting the second of the two best times to fish every season.

The next 2 months ~ SIXTY DAYS ~ of declining weather, changing patterns, NW blowouts, tournaments, trips, friction with the other halves.

What do you love and what you just can't stand for the Fall Run?

I love the first hours of a NE'str but I can't stand watching it all happen while I'm at work.

I hate cold fingers as well, but love it when you can warm them up in the water

I love the fall stroll across Cuttyhunk to favorite spots, the changing colors of the leaves, the smell of the cool/salty fall air, the sunrise, the sunset, seeing the occasional whitetail scurry up a hill closeby.......and washing the striper slime out of my waders from hauling one back across the island over my shoulder! Ahhhhh yes! Soon!

I miss the Cape sand on the backside......the quiet of a lonely, isolated stretch of beach after dark! The fall sunrise after a night of catching......winter whispering through the dune grass that it is coming as I walk off with my seasons best fish dragging in the sand!

I love everything about fall fishing, the crisp air, the increased expectations on my way to the spot, but I do hate when we get hit with an October Nor'easter that screws everything up for a week

I love the cool mornings that lead into warm days.

I hate the fact that the fall run is not as predictable as the spring run. It can be as short as a couple of days when the big fish push through a few of the spots that I fish and if you are not there, you are out of luck. I am usually working when this happens. I hate the fact that winter is around the corner.

I love the fall sunrise over the ocean and knowing that a 50 pounder can be the next cast away. I can't stand when the birds are working and you can see the fish blitzing but they are just out of casts reach to get to them.

I love day time surface action in the fall. What a ball.

Driving the beaches is fun too.

Fall fishing can be great into December. Biggest bluefish ever for me were caught in the last few days in Nov. I've seen huge stripers caught in Dec too.

I love that all the guys out there in late September and October know what they're doing and "the other guys" are at home where it's nice and warm. Fishing becomes a much more peaceful pursuit.

What I like about the fall run: When everything begins to smell like bass. My hands, my tackle, the kitchen, the water, the air, everywhere. It's the smell, hard to miss, that means it is on, the fishing, the blitzing, the fall.

What I hate about the fall run: Being out of the country and missing the whole shebang...rrrrgh

I love; that all the yahoo's and tourists go away, massive blue fish blitzes, and staying up all night for days at a time.

I hate weed in the water for a week after a storm. I hate sunny days

I love that there are much less people out fishing, no restrictions on ramps you can use, and the light the angle of the sun casts this time of year is a beautiful thing.

Best things about the fall run besides the chance at some great fish are:
1. Having your "spots" to yourself.
2. Starting out in the morning being able to see your breath, then taking off layers of clothes as it warms to the perfect fishing temp.
3. Spending a Sunday morning out fishing, going home and taking a short nap, then waking up to watch football all day.

I've learned a lot from folks on this site but sometimes I think I fish in a opposite universe than most people out here. Fishing mostly at night, from May - September, most of my spots are empty, come October there are crowds! I think there are more people fishing in the fall than any other time of the year. A few examples - I fish a "hole" in RI where there is plenty of public parking, come the fall, there are times I cannot even get in the lot. At some breachways, I've seen yahoos in jeans, mid-November, ice and snow on the ground, standing in the water casting! I never ran into anything like this all year, even in 80 degree weather!

So fall to me, means crowds!
I like the crisp air, not sweating while walking a mile to a spot, the ice on my eels lasts longer.

The crisp fresh mornings, empty boat ramps, Just the great outdoors curzing the sound wind in my hair (what I got left) I just love being on the water!

I hate that are summers are way to short!! I hate that after Oct we have 7 months of nothing!!

Look, this is gonna happen. Here is what you do. Give your wife a couple crisp $100 bills, kiss her, and tell her to treat herself to something nice, then tell her this will all be over in November and we will do something she wants to do then. She will stop giving you the evil eye when the tide is right and your headed out the door each night.
