The good, the bad and what were you thinking?

Last night I was working on a Christmas present for my grandaughter when the return spring to the quill on my drill press broke, I went to the tool box to get a wrench and the draw jammed, forcing me to remove the draw below it... well to my surprise, I found 3 very old plugs, some of the first ones I ever built, some time in the 80's... my wandering mind then dug out some stuff that is no longer in use that I have built ,some were good, some were not so good and there are two that I ask myelf...What were you thinking?

First are a pair of small poppers, Atom knockoffs, no doubt, and a needle fish, no idea where I got the idea, or who's design I plilfered, surely it wasnt my own...

Next are a trio swimmers, made some time in the 90's,fitted with homemade lips, two out of the three have been refinished, the originals all sported bead eyes and were painted with good old rustolium and varnish, they all caught fish, none were fished again after refinishing....

more in the next post...

Next are a pair of early jointeds, I made several of the solid hook in the tail eels before changing to a more conventional style... it worked, but not well, the tail section lacked action, the bills were mome made, the next is of one of my first jointed pikie's, this thing is a beast, 12" long made of rock maple, it weighs just shy of 7 ounces, although it appears to be through wired, all connections were pinned, the pins were recessed and then the holes covered with putty, I made 3 different bills to get the damn thing to swim... it caught several fish before i retired it for a more user friendly model...

Next picture is of a few plugs that just didnt workout.... I dont even recall ar rhis time what their malfuntion was... I only know they were in the "abort" bucket

What were you thinking..

Next are a pair that didnt desreve paint, epoxy or anything except for a smokey funeral...I believe I must have painted and epoxied them for practice....

Oh yea, they darted allright, 3 feet to either side before turtling and making a poor attempt at being some kind of a mutant surface chugger...

So there are a few skeletons from my plug making past... have a good laugh on me... I know I had fun making them, and they still make me smile...
