Pain in the $%#@!&*^
Picked the skiff up from it's spring tune up and now I can't get it to start! WTF! It started first pull after the winter. The notes on the invoice said it was hard to start for them and ran rough but then settled down and ran strong. I didn't have them touch the carb seeing they did that mid summer last year and it ran great the rest of the season. Fu%&^%$*(! season is here and I thought I was ahead of the game going in. Nice welcome to my sophmore year as a boat owner!

owning a boat is both fun and a royal pain in the ass at the same time IMO. I have had several issues already this year and haven't even been out of the yard yet. Pretty much a normal year so far.

If it has gas from last season in it, might have to use it up or mix with some fresh gas to get her going good?
15 hp must be on a 6 gallon tank? dump it and get all fresh gas.

Yea Macojoe I dumped the tank a couple of weeks ago. Filled it with fresh stuff today and added a couple of ounces of startron. It's seems to be ok now. I ran it twice and shut her down and she started right up again. Then I disconnected fuel hose and ran her dry. I'll try again in the morning on the muffs and see what happens.

The Latest
OK came back from a birthday party with for a bunch of 3 year olds. My son Jacob tells me when we get back home "you gotta get that motor started dad so we can go fishing tomorrow". I said yea you're right after having a good laugh. A few pulls later it cranked over and ran good. I took the cover and really cranked her up and she sounded good. A little on the smokey side but that seemed to subside. I'll take her out next week after work in the south river. Ahhh the joys of owning a boat! At least I'm laughing now though. My son said after it was running good "see dad we're all set now"! To be continued...........

i was reminded of the time i was out fishing in the boat and got stuck... talk about frustrating
i got stuck on top of a tree (a sunken tree ) and couldn't get off
no matter how i nudged ,shifted my weight, paddled ....absolutely nothing worked !!
i was out there so long rockin .....i re coined this song...
rock rock rock your boat, wedged upon a tree, merrilly, merilly
, merrilly Merrilly life ain't - so .........happy...........
and it took me (literally) hours to finally get off of that friggan tree....
that by the time i got back to shore...i was so darned mad
i just about
left everything
just sitting there because......... i hated it all by then...
and that takes a whole bunch of frustration to feel like that.
my point is... I CAN
i.d.e.n.t.i.f.y.

Now that, is FUNNY!
I can only laugh because we have all had times when the most appropriate response it to have a complete temper tantrum! If I had a nickle for everytime I muttered "This G.D. Boat!"

Well like I said something always happens. I am getting my tin boat together today as the fishing areas I go to in the spring only require the small boat. I throw the 15 hp Johnson on the back and proceed to take off the lower unit to replace the water pump which I do every year as I am always in very shallow sandy areas. Notice one of the 6 bolts is gone, oh well so I take off the first one , snap. The next three ok. The next one snap. Drop the lower unit and notice the other one has snapped , not missing. So I got 3 snapped and 3 out. Got plenty of drills and taps so I drilled out all 3 with a crappy hand drill I have, PIA, but 2 are going to need helicoils, which we have at work thank god. Just another fun thing about owning a boat. I think I waited too long to replace the zinc, every other year I do it, on the motor and the stainless bolts ate into the aluminum lower unit.

My son and I went out on the South River yesterday afternoon while my wife and daughter went to the beauty salon as part of her Mothers Day. Started right up and ran very good. The only issue be it a minor one is at low idle for extended periods can cause a stutter and sometimes stall when I go to get her up to full speed. I have to have a real feel for the throttle and ease it at the beginning and then she kicks in good. I lived with this last summer and it didn't really bother me. I used a product from Lowes called Blaster 50 in the lawn mower section and took the plugs out and sprayed it in the cylinders and let it soak in for 15 minutes before I turned her over. Ran strong after that. I bought it with no intention of using it on the outboard but it worked so good on my mowers and the can said it works for outboards and other small engines I said "What the Hell"! Also as a rule/habit i always pull the fuel hose off and let the motor run dry at the dock. What do you guys think of that? Should I bother doing that?

is that to avoid your gas in the engine from going funky.?
i would think that's over kill...
unless it is for some other reason.
the other thing i was gonna say is...
try not doing that and then see how she runs next.
