The demos that are done should definetly be taped and made part of the archives here.

I, for one, would find it very educational if the demos were taped and archived on the site.
-or-
You guys can start giving me plugs so I don't have to learn

Agree. The knowledge that people have here would be a great thing to have at the click of a button.

Stop pulling out the silver platter..how's anyone going to learn to do anything if everything comes down to a click of a button.Think for yourself, get your hands dirty, make mistakes,LEARN BUY DOING.Perhaps you'll figure out along the way how and what makes a plug work.Do the homework it'll make you a better builder.

I have been building plugs since the early 80's mostly by hand only going to the lathe in the last five years. I started using a hand rasp, palm sander and non-reversible drill.
I would have killed for the chance to see something on film to help me out. Yes I learned the hard way but just because I did doesn't mean that we can't make it less complicated for others.
If we had that attitude we would still all be living in caves.
Film away.

although, I hear what Grapenuts is saying, I find certain things easier if I can physically watch someone do it rather then read it in a book. It's not just about learning how to do it but adapting what you learn and make it work best for the individual. 6 ways to skin a cat.

Videos would be nice, sort of like plugbuilding porn.
Interesting to see how other guys do things.
Don't worry you can't just watch a movie and know how to do it.
If that's all it took my kids would be geniuses from watching TV.

I'm with Flap on this one. Have made plugs by hand, both with sanders, dremels, etc, as well as hand carve, but it would be nice to see how some of these guys create the sick plugs that they do.
Grapenuts, if you never watch videos, read books, or instructions to learn anything then I am truly jealous. Some of us though, could use a little guidance.
As far as comparing this to spot burning....way off.
TT, I still think it'd be a great idea.

That's a fine idea, yes jigs are allowed, they are lures too. I love jigs.
John, like I told you, you could video me working the lathe maybe thru drilling or something, but just film the lathe and my hands, I don't want to break the lens.

Wow some hard arses here. I guess that some folks never took a note in class or watched a "movie" to help with grasping a consept. Might's well close down all them thar colleeegeees and let folks learn whats to be learnt by doin'! I've stood and WATCHED guys spin 'em and carve 'em...got home and tried the same thing (so I thought)...NADA! Burning spots is one thing...YA the ocean was put there only for my use! BUT a video of a neat new/different way to do something to me is a gift from the builder to those that want to get better or experiment. TT do the video...if someone doesn't want to be videoed, then don't do a demonstration...keep yer secrets to yerself!

Echo what most have said. As a new builder, I am not looking for the holy grail of plug building with the videos. What's fun to me is being able to be creative and try new things. Thought it would be nice to be able to look up something quick on here and apply it at home. I watched #^^^^^^^^^^^&'s tail wrap demo last year about 10 times and by the time I got home, I was and still am &^*_(*&* it up.
Must have some only children here who don't play well with others. Hopefully they wear signs so we don't disturb them with any petty questions or overhear any of their secret chat at Plugfest.

ok the general feeling Im getting here is that some folks are for videos and some are not for videos. We'll just ask folks giving demonstrations if they mind their demo recorded or not, that seem ok for folks?

sure
It works for me. I guess I shouldn't zap-a-gap my fingers together this time. Keep TT and Stewie away from my jigs anyway. At least now, we'll have video surveillance.

Not even close to being in the same category Karl, watching a video does not make you an instant Stan Gibbs. You still have to pick up the tools and try it.
Why have demos at all then at PF?
Why go to school for that matter?
Imagine,"okay kids no more schools they are all closed because we now know it's better for you to learn everything on your own"
We have enough stupid people as it is, educating someone in the proper techniques of any endeavour involving motorized tools, sharp instruments that mishandled can cause great harm or at the least cause them to be discouraged is never a bad thing.
And as far as comparing expalining how to build a plug to leading someone to your honey hole, not even close.
But that aside, are you coming to PF? You know we do miss your presence there and seeing your work.

(btw one pc o' the cedar exploded on me, I have sawed the other into quarters and am making "Nauset Needles" with them. Boy that stuff smells good.)

No matter what you read or see you still have to connect the dots by doing.
Plug making is like skiing. You can watch all the videos and read all the articles and books you want to about skiing but only time on the slopes give you the techniques and knowledge to be able to ski double black diamonds. (Hey - I'm from Vermont - I had to draw a parallel to skiing sometime)
From the info I've gotten from here I usually only fail at my first 5 or 6 attempts instead failing 15 or 20 times.
I'm all into sharing info on the basics and widely known techniques and designs. But by the same token folks that have something they put the time and sweat into should keep them secret or only share it with their inner circle.
There's lots of info here. And some golden nuggets. There is a bit on silver platters but most stuff takes research and experimentation. Videos would just be part of the mix. Converting information into application is the hard part.

would love to have a video for the off center turning demo. It was hard to see ( I'm short and getting shorter) and hard to hear ( getting older) I watched it 3 times and forgot most of it by the time I got back to Mystic (part of getting older). Actually, I did remember how to get home from there. That's a good thing.
