Last Sunday, I went, by myself, to the jetty at Barnegat Lighthouse State Park in New Jersey to photograph the
Harlequins and other sea birds. Unfortunately, I slipped and ended up inside the jetty, upside down and trapped
between two fifteen foot, granite boulders. My feet were straight above me and I could not move. I tried for fifteen
minutes and finally had to give up. It took me another ten minutes to reach the cell phone in my back left hip pocket.
When I opened it, it said “No Service!” I won’t tell you what I said. Still, I hit 9-1-1, speaker and raised my left arm
as high as I could (my right arm was pinned beneath me!) Thank God, the 9-1-1 service came on and good old Ronnie
was able to get the Coast Guard and Long Beach Island Fire Department to come after me. It took them over an hour
to find me and I cannot describe how terrifying the wait was. Here was this foolish old man trapped inside a jetty,
no one around, upside down and the tide coming in!
In any event, all’s well that ends well and when I heard Vince’s voice and saw his yellow-helmeted face smiling at me…
oh well, you know how I felt. It took six of them to carefully lift me out of my predicament and get me to the
ambulance headed to Southern Ocean County Hospital. Now I am back home with a bunch of stitches in my head,
a bump on the side of it the size of an orange; two black eyes; a broken wrist; a sore shoulder and a greatly
damaged dignity. I will be ever grateful to 9-1-1, Nextel-Sprint, all the Emergency volunteers who came to help me,

and, of course, Dr. John Sullivan and the folks at Southern Ocean County Hospital who took such good care of me.

a very timely thread NEBE

typically our focus is else where

on breaking fish.... or bird watching

girl watching whatever with quick glances

down to where our next step is....

that's painful just to look at that poor guy.

wow! and thanks for the warning

Man, I saw that at the other site yesterday morning...gave me the chills...

Looks a lot like a few places I frequent - good Spring safety reminder that being on rocks like that ain't a party at times if you're not keeping your eye on the ball...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

Jeezzzzz, what a friggin nightmare. I am glad all turned out well and you had your cell phone on you. Big rocks and heads don't usually react badly when mixed, it could have been a lot worse if you went unconscious. Glad your back home

Hope you feel well again soon.

Your right ... Especially wearing korkers going "down hill" .. If your spikes/rear foot hangs up, while going down hill , your going arse over tea kettle .. Saw it twice just last year .. both times required hospital visits ..

Reminds me of when I was young and dumb...I use to RUN the west wall in East Matunuck in the middle of the night with a tank on my back, a weight belt, Allen Light (filled with 10 D cell batteries) and moste nights a few pounds of bugs as well...and usually solo. Glad everything turned out okay -- could happen to anyone...and in the blink of an eye.

Imagine the tide coming in and knowing your going to get covered w/water! Glad he was unhurt. The 911 operator prob. thought he was lying when he told them what happened.

Seriously, he took some nice bird pictures though.
