Who's giving it a shot this weekend?

Hey all,

I knwo some of you ambitious guys have already gone out and caught your first bass of the year but I have not seen a striped bass in months. I may be fishing in Md this weekend if not I'll be on the cape trying for my first 2009 bass there. Anybody else trying for their first this coming weekend?

I'm gonna give it a shot midweek - the timing is about right for Newport -

Actually, some years I just wait a little later for the big girls to show but this year I want to do my own personal stock assessment on juvies to get a feel for it -

Sort of like looking at your retirement fishing fund...

"There is no royal road to this heavy surf-fishing. With all the appliances for comfort experience can suggest, there is a certain amount of hard work to be done and exposure to be bourne as a part of the price of success." From "Striped Bass," Scribner's Magazine, 1881.

I probably will try somewhere in CT during midweek. Good Friday I have off so I think I will hit it pretty hard this weekend.

Taking kids out for the trout sunday and maybe hit the Seekonk river . I've gotten holdovers and early fish there as well this time of year. Last year not so much... A few years ago I got a 29-30" mid-march just farting around with a new fly rod I was trying out.. Very memorable fish given the circumstances.

Season is too long to start now. If you go till December like some of us, starting now burns you out. I use to. Oh yeah!! West Wall in March. Deep Hole and in back of the Ocean Mist every morning in April. Rather wait and burn the other end of the candle for the last of the big girls in December.

No boat, back in the suds.

If the target is big fish, I'd wait until at least May 15.

I keep a great big jar of goodwill on the shelf that gets filled between November 15 and May 15. It would be a sin to let any of it leak out too early..

Still been hitting freshwater though. I did have a fish close to 20# last weekend on 6# line right up to the boat that was hooked on the tail...twas a carp.

It's not the bait
At the end of your line
It's the fishing hole

I'm going to spend part of this coming weekend getting stuff ready. I've got to organize plug bags and put some line on a few reels. If the weather is decent, I'll be taking my 4 y.o. son to the local pond to teach him how to cast a spinning reel and hopefully catch a few fish.

I'm planning to be on my first schoolies around April 23 and the first keeper around May 8th.

I go down to Md november through March to fish so there's no striper off season for me. I wasn't really down this winter though so I can't wait to get out on the cape!

I think it's that time for me as well. I'll hit my usual April spot, maybe early Sat.
