First Island Caught 50 Of The Season
No, dammit, it wasn't mine....
My friend Kevin Kendrick from Edwards Fishing Tackle called me yesterday morning to tell me that the first local 50 of 2009 from was weighed in at the shop yesterday morning - it weighed in at 50.3 lbs....
The timing is perfect - my brother-in-law is flying in Saturday with his lady to celebrate his 50th birthday.
Last year he caught his first bass after years of bluefish, a fat 35 during a trip with Capt. Corey from the SWE - on a topwater plug mid-morning
This year he's gonna get a graduate course in surfcasting - he bought waders and Korkers from Cabela's and I'm supplying the gear and eels.
If he outfishes me this year and catches a fish to match his age, one thing is clear - I'm never taking that damned kid fishing with me again....
So get out there and fish like you mean it if you haven't yet - I'm gonna be standing on a rock in about an hour with a plug in the water...
Party on, dudes...

Edward's is my bait/tackle shop of choice! Spend a lot of time talking shop with Kevin. It's good to hear someone is catchin' large already. I'm currently "down" waiting on a new hub for the trailer. I checked them last month, but didnt realize the 2 on the first axle appear to be just regular ones from a car (look like drum brake type with no brake hardware in them) and not sealed trailer hubs.
2 days ago, as I pulled into the yard, the damn wheel actually fell off, and yes, it was one of the tires on the "right" side... maybe I do lean to the right a lot . The bearings were completely eaten away. So now I have 2 new hubs on order and pick them up today, so hopefully I can start catchin a few fish bigger than the 14 pounder we got so far.

as much of a drag it is to be down...
i think your incredibly lucky to have the
wheel fall off in your driveway
instead of somewhere that would have involved
other motorists... or the loss of the boat altogether

Definitely true! I saw it was bad at the boat ramp, a few miles from the house, and limped home at a crawl to make sure we got home without causing problems. It has dual axles, so it is on the one wheel on the right side now. Even after the wheel fell off, they trailer stayed level and I was able to back it in and park it by the house and put a floor jack under it.
I'm waiting for west marine to call me to tell me my new hubs are here. Paid the extra for 2 day delivery, so they should be there today.

Good question, Bry - none of the Usual Suspects, didn't recognize the name - I'll have to ask Kev again...
