Big Papi = Big Cheater
What a shame, although I can't say I'm all that suprised if it's true. He's my son's favorite Sox player. At least he's too young to understand the whole steroid thing.

Conservatism is not about leaving people behind. Conservatism is about empowering people to catch up, to give them tools at their disposal that make it possible for them to access all the hope, all the promise, all the opportunity that America offers. - Marco Rubio

ditto, no surprise. Just release all the names and get it over with and move on. The asterisk era.

This is no surprise to me at all, just like many.
Friends and I were discussing his "slump" and we both attributed it to him getting accustomed to not being on the juice any more. I don't believe steroids will make you a better hitter, just more powerful. Getting of the juice through his timing off.

How will MLB handle this era in the future? What will it do to Hall of Fame eligibility?
I believe MLB should list any and all who tested positive and accept it as part of the game's history, just as they did with the Chicago Black Sox. It happened. Recognize it, and move on. A separate wing in Cooperstown for any who tested positive if necessary.
On another note, the Commish should definitely reconsider on Pete Rose's eligibility, especially in light of the steroid era. Put the betting aside for a minute and just look at the numbers and all time ranking in hits, etc. And he didn't juice....

it is a real shame but you can't blame 100 bad apples compared to all the other clean guys in the game. You have to look at it like that or you will give up the game. Just release all the names and move on. There will be no surprises and the ones that cheated will be exposed and their records will have ******* next to their names and fans will know and that is that and move on. Time heals all wounds and it will pass. To good of a game to be ruined by this.

I have given it up Paul...it has been tarnished and sullied! The innocence of the game has been lost and this steroid crap is just the straw that broke the camels back!

Oh.....and its not a "game" anymore and hasn't been for quite awhile....it is a business and this is what has ruined it for me! Make money at all costs......from ownership right on down to the players.....just make money! No love of the game or for the game.....no sense of history and for the glory that used to be "Baseball".

"Just make money" It's the American way. I can't believe what's happened to this country from the every day job to the national pastime. No pride and no shame, just greed. It gets harder to resist and avoid this philosophy every day...........
Just look at Papi and tell me you had no clue he was a juicer, or any of the other bovine monsters thundering around the base paths. We all knew this was coming...
Just name the names, void their contracts, send them home and let's get on with it. Paul's correct , they drag the honest players in their filth with them.

And to think they continue to keep "Charlie Hustle" (who has more hits than anyone who ever played) out of the hall of fame, because he gambled on the game (as a manager, not a player) and that compromised the integrity of the game !!!

Rose should be eligible as a player....exempt as a manager. His wrong doing was done when his playing days were over!! What he did pales in comparison to what the steroid users have done....they have ruined the game. They have taken the integrity out of the game!

Paul---I'd be willing to bet that there weren't 100 clean guys in the game at the height of juicing. Canseco--who's been proven right about almost everything in his book--said it was something like 85% of the players in MLB. I'm thinking he might even have been on the low side. Don't forget that the union warned all of the players well in advance that these "anonymous" tests were going to be given. The fact that 104 players still tested positive is amazing and just the tip of the iceberg.
Also--if you guys think that Manny and Papi were the only two guys on the Sox juicing--I have a bridge to sell you.
And while I agree that Rose should be in the Hall--let's not forget that he cut a deal with Fay Vincent, the Commissioner at the time--he accepted the lifetime ban, including HOF ineligibility, in return for baseball keeping the nature and extent of his gambling secret. Then, almost immediately, he started lobbying the press for reinstatement, and to this very day, continues to deny that he ever bet on baseball.

Bart Giamatti was the one who initially banned him. His unexpected death has thrown a all subsequent commissioners in a bind as they don't want to be theone who overrules Giamatti.

I have to agree with Mike P that the number is much higher than what has been disclosed. The players of the current generation are no different than the players that took amphetamines, etc. in the 50s and 60s. Pro athletes have been using drugs to enhance their performance for as long as they have been around and we should except that in very rare cases most highly competitive people given the money and pressure of their environment will look for an edge whatever the source.
