Block report

Just got back from a 4 day on the island. Fish at almost every spot i tried. Only one skunking and that was only for about an hour, the place had a bad wind. Shockingly, most of the fish were caught on green needles and eels! They were liking the dannys also. Nothin too huge, biggest was 22 lbs, and a lot close to that size. The biggest of out group was a 31 lb. What is the deal with green needles out there? I did have a brand new vmc 5/0 siwash bent and lost the fish that was attached. I couldn't turn that fish. Put the 1201L in the truck for the duration of the trip after that happened. I probably could have sold green red gills out there for 10 bucks each.

Everything is better on the rocks.

Green Needlefish and Red Gills....they work but so do a lot of newer things also. I used just a small 4-slot plug bag out there and eels. Usually, the people fishing the traditional stuff are the people with either experience, or they are with someone who is. Five and ten feet either way from where you like to stand, the distance cast, etc, all can make a big difference out there also.

I was serious in a joking way, i know they work out there, everyone does. But what the hell is so special about em there. I brought 4 different greenies but used a super strike about 80% of the time. When i got into a run of smaller fish, < 32" i switched over to a pollack cowboy and a herring danny and culled out the bigger fish. I got a massive tail smack on a 10" AH needle in white, she never came back for seconds though.

Everything is better on the rocks.

Rob,
Love to hear it. Red Gills working means the island is loaded with sand eels. Islander77 knows about Block Island Green - his dad was one of if not the first to use that pattern. The color works everywhere not just Block - I'm always amazed why guys don't use it more on the mainland. I have one of Tagger's Spofford Needles in neon green and it's on the third set of trebles this season - bass can't leave it alone!

I have a can of the absolute BRIGHTEST neon green spray paint available, (not easy to find) and being an artist, have a trick that makes it even brighter... Long gone are my days of searching for a certain plug in a certain color... I have also had luck on neon needles... but I have to say that any night they were killing the green needle, they were smashing all the other colors as well... I think its usually more about PROFILE then COLOR...

You are right but I'll tell you guys a little secret. I was searching for the Neon green everywhere. Happened to walk into an Ace hardware in Warwick (Saks) and yep, they got it. Kinda pricey at $7.00 a rattle can but worth the price.

No boat, back in the suds.

you need a green that looks like an 80's skiing outfit... I dont have hundreds and hundreds of plugs... so I'm constantly painting and re-painting plugs based on what i need them for... (long enough before fishing so they no longer smell...)

The block island ferry schedule for this time of month S U C K S!!!! I had plans to go tomorrow right after work, figuring there's got to be a ferry around 6pm... all packed up, plans made, come to find out there's only 2 ferries per day, and the LAST one is at 2:30pm... I would figure if youre only going to have 2 per day, you'd have one morning, one evening... oh well...

yeah... only pt judith... just checked and realized the high speed ferry runs til 5:30 pm... but I still wouldnt make it... 6pm I could make, 5:30 and I'd probably watch it exit the west gap from my car... I'll make it happen one more time this season, somehow, alone if I have to...

or worse yet, you make it onto the ferry in the nick of time, just to realize your plug bag or korkers are in the car!!! (hasnt happened, but this is the type of thing that could easily happen when it comes down to minutes and seconds...

When mentioning the ferry is "full", I'm assuming you mean cars, and not passengers, right? Last I checked, traditional ferry does not take reservations for walk ons... just cars.... Some comments are causing me to second -guess... I was planning on heading there with my bike (bicycle)

Islander77,
Halloween on the Block - can't get better than that - love the island traditions. Throw some TP on Rebecca at the Well for me.
Enjoy casting with your son.
