Potomac River Filled With Inter sex Fish

Potomac River Filled With Inter sex Fish

An alarming new study finds that more than 80 percent of the male bass fish swimming in Washington's Potomac River exhibit both male and female sex characteristics, the Guardian reports. In addition to having testes, many male bass have also begun producing eggs, which researchers chalk up to the "toxic stew" of weird chemicals being dumped in the river. While part of the contamination comes from agricultural runoff, the Potomac Conservancy study found that birth control, prescription drugs, and other chemically enhanced products were also contributing to piscine sexual confusion. This isn't just limited to the Potomac, either: A similar study conducted in 2009 revealed that out of 111 sites tested nationwide, roughly a third contained intersex fish.

Maybe he meant the dreaded seabass....there are many fish that have both characteristics..but I doubt very much that there is a chemical that changes the actual dna of a living fish..

Supposedly (and as mentioned above) the chemicals and hormones from birth control in the water is leading to this - I've heard & read this before - not sure on how true it is.

I'm surprised that with all the drugs that get "disposed of" by flushing, that these fish can do anything.
Let's see, they can't get depressed, won't have trouble sleeping, they won't have any intestinal issues, no heartburn, high blood pressure, cholesterol, bloating, water retention, mood swings or ANY irrectile dysfunction at all!

Heck, I doubt that they can feel anything at all!

Pretty soon you can skip going to the pharamcist and just go fishing instead.

I just read the article. Genetic mutation induced via chemicals. Not good.

The sentence that floored me was: "About 5 million people live in the greater Washington area, and 90% of them get their drinking water from the Potomac." I wonder what the effect of these chemicals will be on humans. It could make filling out applications that only have M or F check boxes difficult.

Have you seen how inept government has been for the last 20 years?

Hey, if you really want to drink something that's gonna make you grow a vagina, order a wine cooler...

Gotta give Bill Maher credit for that one...

Thumbs down the real drug problem

this is yet another example of the real drug problem
we have here in the United States

The PILL pushers have all the Doctors excepting nice
Bonuses for being the prescriber's for all their fancy drugs.
The REPS have our Govermental officials eating out of their Hands.

There are people scouring the earth 24/7 looking for new species
of plant and animal in every country in the world and in every body of water trying to find that latest and greatest new magic FIX compund that can be synthasized and commercialized and programmed into our heads
via are oversized High definition Televisions.

The prices for these drugs are sometimes astronomical and the younger generation are having PILL parties where they reach into
a large bowl and sight unseen pop a prescription drug to get high.

(this is "WHY" people are flushing pills so regularly to dispose of them)

Then they (our kids) also consume ALCOHOL to increase the effect when it clearly states on the paperwork (do NOT take these when consuming alcohol ) Of course they (our kids) are not reading the paperwork in ULTRA FINE print

Now it might be a classic Cliche'

But in reality.... PILLS (and texting) are the ASSASINS of Youth.

they are also the sexually transgendering detrimental substances
to fish.

these have to resident largemouths I think. DC WASA is the process of a huge overhaul to its sewer system. They are trying to lower the overflow by a drastic amount which would be awesome. The overflow occurs when significant rain/snow goes down stormdrains and overwhelms the system. This happens about 60 times a year. During these events the water level is too much for the system and the overflow has to go to the river or flood the streets/back up into houses. Currently this happens about 60 times a year and WASA's trying to reduce it 2 times a year in the next ten years which would be pretty good. It sucks that these overflows occur but the alternative is to have the storm drains go directly to the river which would put all the petroleum runoff in the water as well as ice melting chemical and all the other crap every time it rains. So hopefully the new changes will improve things.

Although the study is true, I believe this is an attention grab by the Potomac Organization, I cannot find the 80% figure anywhere in the original document.
i believe this organization has jumped on this study to raise funds or awareness for the organization itself. good cause but also over exagerrated

Arrow well

you might have a point there WHD except a similar finding was found just outside Las Vegas not long ago suggesting that this is a wide spread phenomenon.
