Accurate ??

Finally broke ice this afternoon & got clear to run the boat for the first time since the bossman & I put it In///
Question , nevering owning a boat with a speedometer before += how accurate are they ?? I didn,t hookup the gps because of rhe snow & i was just taken it for a ride///
She tacked out at 45 mph/that seems high to me //but there is no doubt my range this season will change big time//
Thanks

Oh thats with the standard prop/the s/s should kick it up a little more /////////

ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE !!!

The ones I've been around have been pretty close, it usally seaweed that gets stuck on those things to get inaccurate readings.
45mph .... today ... did you make it back in before the snow, more importantly, did you get a line wet??

Clamdigger,
I would say that the speedometers and fishfinder speed sensors are not that accurate. For example I have seen nearly 50mph on mine while my gps read 40, thats a 10mph differance. I do think the gps is reading a hair slow, so actual speed is probably 42-43mph, but there is noway I was doing 50.....

I agree with 179. I have compared and my fishfinder speedometer is way off forget those water tube speedometer things, they are garbage..(Disconnected mine the first month i owned the boat)

GPS is probably the most accurate you will get.

Mike are you talking the digital that comes with the Yamaha? If so I find that it reads low at high speeds and can be way off or not read at all at low speeds. I do not know how this unit reads as there is no transom pick up? I think it is fig. off the motor some how and that its why it can be so far off. And if that is so will changing the prop also make it read even more off?

Guys,
Don't forget that the LORAN or GPS is reading your speed over the bottom, while the speedo on the boat/fishfinder is reading your speed through the water. Depending on current that can be a big difference. IMHO the speedo that come with the boats are worthless, but the ones on the fishfiner will give you a pretty good idea of your speed through the water.
