MONOMOY ISLAND

Ive been looking to get out to Monomoy Island one of these days . Has anyone here ever fished there or has stayed the night . I was thinking of a marathon 24hr trip out there this upcoming year . Get dropped off by water taxi house just fish from the time we get there till the time we leave . if it is allowed just stay and fish all night . Just throwing out a bone for anyone that has this same desire . Anyone have interest . I have some #s and websites im scoping out now for info . so I m only in the dreaming stage right now . if any one could shed some light on this great fishing island please let me know .

Thanks!! I was looking for a winter of mere cabin fever!! Now I'll be itchin' for Monomy for the rest of the winter!!!
I'm game, as well as another individual from these pages that is DYING to go there to fish at night. I've heard rumors that your not supposed to go there overnight but not sure exactly

Did you read that 2 part article in OTW a couple years ago about fishing Monomoy in the old days before the storm???

No John I didnt get to read that article . Maybe Ill do a search on their site . I emailed the ripryder the water taxi that serves Monomoy to find out the deal on fishing at night . I dont understand why you cant they let you stay in the old keepers house overnite . I will keep my fingers searching the net . I need these kind of projects to get through the winter . Im also setting up a plug box and extenders for my pickup to extend the usable space out to my tailgate . Any thing I can do to relive the winter stress . Man its going to be a lo oh no im not going there sorry .

From a guy I used to work. aparently grandmother owns(ed) a piece of property on Monomoy but all of the property would be turned over to the National Parks or some preservation group when the owner passed on. I had hoped to find out more info but he no longer works with me.

Ways to pass the winter: ROD BUILDING!! Ever build your own fishin' rod??

Chris, It's because of the GHOSTS!!!

John check out Keith's site http://www.monomoyislandferry.com His pictures will help you drool thru the winter. The woman and the boy on the beach live down the road from me, Holly and Jared. You met Jared's grandfather on the night of Octoberfest (Paul). Can we still try that night manuvers thing with a navy seal raft? I can dream.

A guy I used to work with has stayed overnight many times. You have to carry over everything including water, food, and most important toilet paper. I guess its kind of freaky at night with the seals and coyotes but the fishing can be real good at times.

sorry I have no patience for rod building . I make reservations search the web for an entire year of fishing . Once April gets here its on the water no time for planning .

Slipknot
Im game no Navy seal but I ride stealth like on me feets . Thats good I like to fish with ghosts never a tangle they have their deceased bass and I have the live ones .
I fish exclusivly alone so its nice to have the ghostly guys around to chat with . You get odd looks when people come around and see you talking to your self . Me and Ghosty just get a laugh about the looks .

canalratt
That is the attraction for me the seals and coyotes deer and ghosts and the boogieman . And Oh yeah the old striped bastage of course .

I just try and find the most outrageous places I can to fish locally . I also want to wade out to charles island in Milford for a 12hr fishing excursion low tide to low tide .

Chris, a couple trips for you and Ghosty :P :

A Block Island all-nighter. Catch the 7pm ferry out of Gallilee and you're on the Island 45 minutes later. The sun will soon set and you have an entire Island to fish before you get your lousy breakfast at the Airport when it opens at 6am (the waitress is cute but she has more tatoos than some women have bad hair days)... In those many hours of darkness you will work some of the most impressive striper grounds you will ever see. Truly amazing!!

The Squibby walk. Also beautiful bassy waters and while I must admit that I haven't walked the whole length, it is incredible fish country. This year, I intend to work this stretch of Striper legend all of the way, back and forth and inside out...

Also a true blast is wading Cotuit flats for bluefish!! When the conditions present themselves, you can wade out at least 1/4 mile to massive schools of 4-8 pound bluefish busting the surface as they quickly move in and out of range. You need to bring a longer stick as you are often casting a couple hundred feet with the water running by at chest height. Five minutes later, they can often be found busting 20 feet away... Not that swimming with the Bluefish is for the faint of heart...

A few things for you to think about...

Chris, you can bike it but it is best to take a vehicle over as you're likely to get run over by another car when the fog rolls in. I've never been to Scotland but I imagine it looks a lot like Block, fog and mist and all... I hope to get over there a couple times this coming summer :-D

I would also like to fish Cuttyhunk but from shore. Nothing against that boat guys but all of this reading of bass stands and old clubs and old yarns makes me want to work these same near-mystical surflines...

Chris,

If you do go out to Charles Island for the night, watch out for the rats. The island is loaded with them and they love to come out at night. It is good fishing though if you can deal with them, lots of rocks around the whole island.

John R,
Our club the CT Surfcasters has a trip to Cuttyhunk every spring for club members if you are interested; great fishing, people, and food. Plus we have a tournament with the locals. Keep it in mind for next year!

Thanks Mark I have heard of the rats out there being plentiful . Used to be a big hotel out there too .

I read about your trips to Cuttyhunk during the spring . Sounds like a great time . The Cuttyhunk Club Clubhouse looks like it must have been a great place to hang out . Now that is a clubhouse .Enjoy it .

Thanks to everyone who gave me their insight . It appears from people Ive talked to it is a federal offence to be caught there at night . I do want to check it out so I guess it is going to have to be a day thing until I find out for sure . I dont want to fish ilegally .
Saltydog thanks for the offer if it is still open in the spring lets talk .

HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Ok, I love sight fishing, how far out is Monomy from the closest ramp on the cape and what town would that be in?

Hope everyone had a good holiday, tight lines.

GS, you HAVE led a sheltered life, haven't you :P

Monomoy is the dead skin hanging off the elbow of the Cape. There are several places to put in from Dennis and Chatham Stage harbor or Pleasant Bay. Bill C, who would be posting here but he works 70 hours a week (we USED to fish together) spent a week fishing off Monomoy with his dad in their 23' Wellcraft (nice boat), got into nice blasts of keeper bass, blues, albies, AND Bonito off the rips in September. The only thing they missed was Spanish Macs...
