Motorized bikes on vineyard and block island?
Didn't know which forum to ask this question. I was thinking of throwing together a bike with a 49cc motor I just acquired, to get to different spots on Block island and maybe bring to Vineyard next year. I know in Massachusetts if it's less than 50cc it doesn't qualify as a moped, but I was wondering if this would be a legal way to get around on the block and vineyard? Anyone ever seen any motorized bikes on these islands? When I went to Nantucket I remember lots of mopeds and moped rental places.Any info on the legality of this is greatly appreciated.
I was also going to add a freewheel on the rear tire so I could pedal it as well when not running the motor.

I wouldn't see a problem on block especially in the off season.

You are not allowed to run the motor on any of the dirt roads on block, so being able to pedal would be good. Mopeds are barred from the dirt roads. Otherwise you should be fine.

Right on thanks for the input guys! Should be a fun project, I'll post up some pictures when I'm done. I tore an engine outta one of those pocket bikes. Just have to find another bike because I don't want to cut up my canal cruiser.

Bring a spare tire or two to block. The unpaved roads are pretty gnarly.

Imho, the moped rentals ruined BI.
I saw a cool scotter/bike hybrid the other day that has large
bike wheels and is pushed like a scotter. Looks like it could
get up some real good speed with little effort.

Man do I agree...and they do a number here on MV as well. The clog up the roads and make it unsafe for all. At least we have bike paths but Mopeds can't use them.
Drive a truck, or walk, that is my suggestion.

I did the traditional bike with a trailer a few times. You gotta be in really good shape for that.
Call a cab, have them drop you off a couple of hours before dusk and pick you up at a predetermined time and spot the next day and work your way around on foot. Start at the south and make your west. Best and cheapest way.

Agree w/Sandman. The Vineyard is a much bigger place than Block, so a car rental might be better. Also, homeowners will get pissy if there is a buzzy 2 stroke pinging around at 3 am.
