If we have another outage like Irene or the octsnowber storm you'd wish you'd done it.
I also have a 30 min battery for the a/v center so I can cleanly shut everything down.

Peter, some years ago I was advised by an audio guy that its a good idea to have a surge protector. I have the "Monster" brand and never had any problems. A bit on the expensive side.

Don't buy anything Monster-branded. It's a waste of money and generally carries a 150-200% markup over an alternative product that is of the same quality.

Just about any cable, wire or cord other than Monster... literally. Their $30-40 HDMI cables are no better than any of the $4 HDMI cables that can be purchased at monoprice.
All of the home audio cables with their "gold connectors for better throughput" is a load of nonsense and no better than most generic alternatives... or even a wire coat hanger for that matter:
"The group was A/B-ing different cables, and unbeknownst to them, the engineer running the test swapped out a set of cables for coat hangers with soldered-on speaker connections. Not a single one was then able to tell the difference between the Monster Cable and the hangers"
Audiophiles can't tell the difference between Monster Cable and coat hangers -- Engadget
Monster products are consistently pushed by retail outlets because they receive an extremely high marginal revenue.

Agree. It's a brand. If you want to buy top quality cables and don't know what to ask, you don't need them.
