Tarpon Fishing

Anybody that plan to go tarpon fishing this month two great places to fish for big tarpon are Marathon Fl. or Ft. Myers.... U get the same great fishing around Ft. Myers as U would at the famous Boca Grande...and less boats and really do not have to worry about crashing into other boats once hooked....most tarpon will be over 100lbs...U want to fish the ocean side... not the mangroves.

Best place to stay is at the LaQuinta Inn on Summerlin Rd. just a few miles from the Sanibel bridge and boat ramp....daily room rate is about 71 bucks per night.....I suggest 1/2 day morning fishing...fish go deep after mid morning...to hot to fish all day.

Hopefully that LaQuinta changed its management staff. I've never had a worse with expierance a hotel before. Two years ago they tripple charged me for a room. It took me two and a half months to get they money credited back to my card and that only happened once I contacted the Flordia Attorney General's office.

If you are chartering a guide, and want to fly fish for the tarpon - the guides will just run north or south to find the fish from Fort Myers up past Gasparilla Island - we used to launch on the ramp located just on the inside of the toll booth to get over to Sanibel - if the La Quinta hotel you are referring to is the hotel one would pass just before getting to the toll booth (as it used to be a Best Western), that little road that borders the hotel heads down to a beach that can be good for wading for redfish and snook at low light periods and a low incoming tide.

But do agree that fishing Boca Grande Pass can be a nightmare to fish with the crazy crowds.

The first time I fished down there in the late 80s - I have always fished with Capt Mike Rehr on Sanibel - most excellent guide - there were only two other boats fly fishing the pods of tarpon moving out front of the islands there heading toward Boca Grande Pass - today, i can only imagine the crowds, as I have not been down there since my daughter was born.

I would personally go out of Marathon/Big Pine if it were me, but I'm partial to that area...
