First keeper of the year!!!!!

Not like I have been burning the midnight oil or anything, but last night I landed a 35-37" keeper on my first cast. It was my first wading trip to the canal this year, and only my second trip there this year as well.
Of course it was the biggest fish on the evening, but I don't care, since I love just being able to wet a line now and then.

Good thing for me that I saved a couple of weeks for a few fall trips, both fresh and salt!

I should add that I'm not a first timer, as I have been fishing the canal for close to 20 years now.
What had me feeling real good about this time was that I had been dealing with a nagging health issue with my left leg, and I was starting to worry that I might not be able to fish again let alone this year.

Bottom line: although my leg isn't 100% I was able to fish comfortably and without any undue stress or strain on the leg.

Now my back is another story.... (not a problem or injury, just another story...)

Congrats on the keeper. The first one of the season is always special, no matter when you get it. I fished the canal Tuesday night and none of my fish were close to that big.

Good for you Tim
you did a lot better than I last night
I went for a few hours and jigged the middle, nothing at my first stop, then on the first cast at second spot had a good hit but then nothing after that at all.

maybe I'll try lighter jigs and closer in next time.

I use lighter jigs because I'm not looking to hit the middle of the canal.
The 1 oz. jigs get the lure into deep enough waters where I usually fish, and as the tide comes in, it just gets deeper.
The only problem I encounter (besides the occaisional weed clumps) is if the current is ripping through. Tuesday was the tail end of the new moon, and the current was strong, so my jigs were pushed through my drift pretty quickly. Fortunately the fish were cruising through that same area.
