There are days at the canal where 50 recreational anglers do way more damage than that.

Think of the eggs in those fish.

You know they (FL Fish and Game) did it right. Made Snook a gamefish and they came back with a vengeance. Tarpon in the Boca Grande pass, redfish.

Hell I have been worrying about the Striper stocks for 40+ years. I went to all the stock assessment meeting in the winter for many years and I just don't have the energy to fight the battles anymore.

Jim White gave up, Steve McKenna, Dave Pickering, Clammer, DZ all the guys who for so long have advocated for the stocks are tired of "pushing the refrigerator up hill alone".

I don't know what it will take for the management folks to see the error of their ways but I know, by the time they do, it will be too late.

No boat, back in the suds.

Those of us who were around 35 years ago remember what the warning signs were then, and see the same things today. No one listened then, and no one listens now. One good spawning year every 5-6 years isn't going to keep the lights on for long.

3 years ago, talk of a 40% or something mortality reduction. Then, there's an awesome YOY index, and everything's all roses and champagne again.

Fast forward to the very next YOY. 0.9. All time low, worse than any year in the early 80s. I once thought, "gee, the SB recovery is the one success story, out of dozens, of their fishery management history. They'll do everything they can to avoid #^&#^&#^&#^&ing it up." Just call me naive.

Florida got it right 30 years ago when they made Snook a game fish. Closed down the commercial season and made it, predominately, a catch and release fishery. Now it's a world class fishery.

The other site has details. In two days last week that boat came home with almost 300 fish in 6 trips.

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

and thats just one boat.....

headboats off the SouthShore (LI) have a big body of medium/large bass not far off the beach right now- they are slaughtering them daily....

and are in full compliance with the regs the whole time

something needs to change

That probably is to show to any LEO who stops a fare before he or she gets home. NY has different size/bag limits for party boat fares. Most recs can only keep one bass between 28" and 40", and one 40"+. Head boat fares can keep two of any size ove 28". They have to show a dated receipt if they're questioned about why they have two over 40. The tags are probably what the boat gives them as proof.

I know some don't like seeing pics like that be really.......what is the problem.

A bunch of guys went on a party boat and kept the 2 bass they could keep.

I kept a couple big bass over 40" last thursday but yesterday caught 20 bass between 26-38" and let the ALL go. Guess I'm a bad guy.

Let me ask this.....Why would this not be an outrage with most of you if this was a deck full of cod, flounder, tog, haddock, fluke, pollack.

When togfest happens and there are pics of a deck of fish when everyone keeps there 3 keepas will there be outrage........don't think so.

Allot of guys want gamefish status. What does that mean??? Can recreational fish be kept with a gamefish status thus seeing the same thing but no comm sale?

I don't know what the answer is but the way allot of people act when seeing pics like this they want to blame somebody else. Maybe the only answer is to stop fishing, targeting, keeping bass for everyone. Maybe then people will be happy. i won't be happy though

I am glad you are outraged. According to the DMF in MA, there are plenty of fish. Years ago we had too many SB, that is why there were more around back then. These people, some who are very educated, can not manage anything. Remember they were in charge of managing SB and codfish while it went to disaster level. They have not saved a damn thing. A forced moratorium is not a form a management. This could have been done without them!!!

IMO The only way to protect the fishery is to protect as a gamefish and allow 1 @ 36 for a rec, and at the same time make significant strides in improving baitfish populations. It has worked before and will work again. It is simple and will bring back big fish for the masses to catch while growing the biomass while protecting the real economic value to the fishing society.

As for attending meetings to make change...Forgetaboutit. You can go and voice your thoughts but there is no way you will make change their minds. Public hearings are a joke. In the end they (the board behind closed doors) read what the scientists and pubic say but then decide to do something that is not connected to either unless they are forced to. Gamefish is the only solution with very a simple rec take. If you want SB for restaurants...go grow them.

I know the canal has it's issues. IMO there should be no fishing in the canal. It is like fishing in a fish ladder. It is a man made passage way. However the public access is so easy that anyone can easily go down there and catch fish. I know that will not happen (closing the canal to fishing) so the only other way is to limit the take to one @ 36. If you want to regulate it further, eliminate rec fishing for bass all together. This might be a good start. Canada does it for tuna and they have more fish than you can shake a stick at. In fact you can not even do C&R in canada for more than one fish per day. C&R kills fish too. After your one fish you can only feed them. I think that is excessive but we could shut bass fishing down all together for a decade and then slowly open it up, with one or two fish per season. (I took one bass 38" home this season, no one needs one per day.) The MSY theory does not work, esp when every "user group" thinks they own a chunk of it, it is only an academic theory, it can not be implemented the way our government allocates the fish to different so called user groups .

You ask ten rec guys what they think the solution is you will get ten different answers. If anything is going to change or get better people will need to work together. Comm, rec, managers.

The attitude of how the fish is valuable to the fishery has to change, how and why they are managed and where the largest threats occur. Pictures like this are polarizing to one issue. You see this stuff come up every year and it draws similar reactions every year. It took a public health issue (PCB's) to really shut down the take. It won't be shut down because people are catching. Not with a plan based on MSY.

If it was 70/80ft off of fire island, it probably is.. I did some work down there in the mid 2000's, and if I recall, 60ft was just under 3 miles from the beach. Don't have a chart handy to confirm.

Sick, especially when you consider the volume of head boats leaving from Captree Island

Seems the coast guard would have the ability to easily monitor this location and revoke head boat licenses. They do it for tuna.

Pretty Fn stupid to toss anything edible over the rail.
Dead is dead.
But then it's government involvement, I'd be surprised if they can pee without getting it all over themselves.
