Long Island Bridge
No New Yawkahs, the one to Long Island in Boston
http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/201...QHN/story.html
Quote:
The bridge has been clearly deteriorating over the years only one vehicle is allowed to cross at a time but city officials did not expect that it would have to be closed so suddenly.
They said it became urgent to do so because the structural deficiencies mirrored those that caused a bridge over the Mississippi River in Minneapolis to collapse in 2007.
The environmental impact evaluation, bridge design, and construction may take up to five years, but we are hopeful that the process can be expedited, said Kate Norton, a spokeswoman for Walsh.
After city officials decided to close the bridge, she said, they activated a plan to maintain all the services provided on the island.
|
So, a bridge that looked haunted and decrepit when I last traveled under it 20 years ago is now in danger of collapsing under continued use, will be replaced for 90 million over a few years.
Our solution is to spend 90 million (first numbers are almost always wrong by half) on a low use bridge.
What does an Analysis of Alternatives say?
Maybe save more than 2/3rds of that with a boat service instead?
Oooh, how about selling the SW corner of the island for a gated community before the GATED community? Waterfront Island Living in Boston Harbor - sweet.

Don't give them any ideas! There are enough lazy people flocking here for the handouts already.

Pretty sure the Boston Police Shooting Range and Boston Fire Academy are out there as well as the Boston Bomb Squad facility...not saying it justifies $90 million!!! Might as well build a tunnel!!!

Those are before the bridge on moon island.
In the late 60 's we used to ride our banana seated sting ray bikes out there and live line macs. Catching decent bass on raggedy ass old plastic Penn reels. You wouldn't believe how nice parts of long island are. Real shame it's used for the bums and crack heads to get soup and a crib for the night. Just let nature cull out the useless.
Used to jump of that bridge a few times if we weren't trying not to die at the Quincy quarrys.

From personal experience, no one should be able to say they're surprised at the condition of the bridge. They have the reports. When you resort to a 10 mph speed limit and one vehicle at a time you're barely hanging on. Justification for replacement can be questioned but that bridge is done.

Geez..I thought we had a bridge coming to LI NY from Mass !
But I'm a New Yawkah and I believe anything, especially what the Govt tells me..right. We have highways in NY, 2 in particular, that have been under reconstruction since before I got married. I'm going into year 45 on that program. I guess that Boston Bridge might have gotten the attention it needed long ago if it went somewhere with a high profile.
