Eel pot
Just pulled my eel pot,,, a whopping 8 spider crab.... :-(
That's tha bad news , threw a surface plug up into the mouth of a creek flowing back into the river and it got smashed', that's the good news :-)
Oh, where was I,,,,,
What's the best local for eel pots? I'm thinking bottom with eel grass, the problem is there's not a lot of eel grass left round here,,, high nitrate count
So what cha think? Plz

Ever see an eel come out out of a brown beer bottle on a sandy bottom?

Brackish water...low tide...seek out deeper areas close to sbore.rocks or pilings help..best bet to set an hour before slack on the drop..
drop...eels spread out on riding water...easier to trap on llow water...good tides next week. ..I can get 100 in a single set (comercial license))

Back in the early 80's I had access to the floats way up inside the north river and I routinely filled those traps with some very large snakes.

Sadly...like all fisheries ..eels are on the decline....unlike 1972 when I began potting eels when I sold both meat and bait eels and anything less than a stuffed pot was a bad set...now...I am only interested in bait eels 12" to 18" ..the rest get "rail dumped"..average set now is 12 to 20 "keepers "....and for the record...I'm not seeing a large number of large yellow eels..All that said. ..good full moon sets this time of year can yield 100 keepers...

Not having much luck with this...
When I first set a pot my 5.5 1961 Johnson crapped out....
Goes back to check/move and the 2 hp crapped out
Finally gets the 2 running almost a week later and someone stole the pot.. Grrrrrr
Like they say "don't give up your day job" ..... :-)
Ordered parts for the 5.5 and making new pots between fishing... I'll get er dun. :-)
Thanks for the info gents

Like they say "don't give up your day job" ..... :-)I hate thieves..I add 10' of 80 lb mono to the pot warp. ...then attached a 12" length of weathered 2×4 with a screw eye to it.in one end..I use this set up in high theft areas...the float is hidden any time the tide is running. ..not totally legal but neither is stealing someone's eel pot...if setting at low tide on.pilings set at the low water mark...only you will know the location.
