Bering Sea is the real deal

26 year old kid I have gotten to know over the past dozen years just returned from a four month trip longline cod fishing on the Bering Sea. Some very cold conditions, like 5 days of 15 degree highs on deck. Big seas off Russia. Good prices for cod. Buyer was Northcoast here in Mass. which was weird. And three weeks in town getting the 140' former crabber repaired after they were struck broadside by a fifty foot rogue wave. (captain had his head in his iPhone watching his daughter's ballgame.....) Lost a rail, crew shelter house on deck crushed, lost a beam and a huge deck hatch. But no serious injuries... This is big boy stuff for young healthy bodies. He did mention a crew member on another boat who snapped and jumped overboard. Dead. His boat was in immediate proximity, but nothing they could do.

Yeah, and that happened four day steam from town..... Thirty five day trip so not much fuel left onboard. Said if they had not had 60 tons of catch onboard they likely would have rolled. Good kid. I just need to get him on a different career path.

I’ve watched The Perfect Storm at least three or four times, maybe once in pajamas, which I think has prepared me for an event like this. I’m sure I’d do fine

Big Respect for guys that do this kind of work... It's definitely not
for everyone, and certainly takes its toll mentally and physically
on even the strongest individuals

My son Leo left Sunday on a 600 ft oil tanker for 9 weeks.
Was supposed to be on a ship that runs the west coat up to Alaska.
He was really looking forward to Going up to Alaska but a mix up put him on another oil tanker in the Gulf of Mexico that runs from Houston Texas to Fort Lauderdale.
Oh well, it’s a lot warmer down there.
