Surfers

What's the all tackle record? Almost got large at Watch hill today. Had several shots at one in the 180-200lb. class. He put in at the end of Misquamicut and passed 40 yards in front of the only 2 guys fishing this side of the breachway. There were fish in front of us at the time also.

Big Fish and I could have caught a half dozen yesterday. Brazen suckas until ya toss a 3 oz plug by them. It wouldn't have been bad but we were there first and they wanted to surf right out in front of us. If they were there before us then it would have been there spot. I was tossing one of Taggers "Big Dave" bluefish plugs out past them and Big Fish read them the riot act. They got the message and moved further down the shore. When the fish moved off we let them have the waaaves back being hospitable.

Funny Tagger...

I suppose that wasn't taken today down at Horseneck then huh?
Overhead+ (about 8 foot)

And its not even the end of it yet...

Newell: I've had surf casters do the same thing and cast ontop of me while I was sitting in the lineup (I'd been there for a while already)... and give me a "Sorry man... wind caught the plug" yeah... right...

and another for you Tagger

It is about common courtesy. Some of my favorite places get overrun with them, sometimes to ridicoulous proportions, cars packed into the lot and down the street. If its too bad, I'll fish somewhere else (or at night). But when I'm there first and they cut in front of me . Surf Kayakers are worse, they move around much more, and seem to not care.

I also know a few local surfers, and am sympathetic. But the idiot factor is very high. I'm all for sharing the ocean, but some of these guys have too much attitude. Its been getting much worse every year, gonna get ugly at some point.

Come on guys lets be honest surfers have the right of way. If you are fishing you should watch we they are. I love fishing and surfing, if I am fishing with surfers around I am aware of where they are and stay out of the way.

Lets be honest, it's WHOS THERE FIRST. If you have five guys fishing a stretch and a surfer or kayaker comes along, they should stay out of our casting zone. Likewise, if the surfers are there, I don't have the right to wade out and cast in front of them. Its common courtesy.

Lightbulb

Never had a problem with surfers, usually cuz I'm fishing at night.

I remember fishing Squibby (not too far from the parking lot) one day and me and a bunch of surfers shared the beach. I broke off a 3 oz polaris popper and one of the surfers paddled out and retrieved if for me. Class act.

I guess the golden rule applies and we gotta share the beach.

Now, if you could find a way to combine the two [like skishing ]

I've retreived plugs...
Caught one without burying the hooks in my hand while ON a wave.

And yes, those idiots in kayaks don't seem to care about anything...

I've had them drop in ontop of me
behind me
infront of me

Waiting for a nasty altercation to happen sooner or later...

The places I fish there some nice surf sometimes but it breaks close to shore..I see them sit,,wait for the best one ,get up, seems like 10 seconds..and dump before hitting shore.. I have friends that surf, they travel looking for waves or pray for a hurricane.. Fishing is 90 degrees to the shore surfing is parralel...The two just don't jive..Just sucs when the bully factor kicks in when your alone ...I try it if I was younger...what the hell..

Guys,
Reposted from a similar discussion on another board.
Did you know that only certain, usually very small sections of a beach are suitable for surfing? Most surfers don't know that only certain, usually small sections of beach are suitable for fishing. If its any consolation, you were probably fishing on one of the small sections suitable for surfing and he figured you could fish anywhere on the beach. I'm not excusing bad behavior, but sometime it helps to know where the other guy is coming from.

Thumbs down Right of Way

Thats hillarious, "hey guys let be honest we have the right of way"(surfer quote). Whoa, thank-you, thank-you jesus for imparting that wisdom on me.
I used to surf many years ago and I never thought I was in charge of the ocean. God if I only knew I would have applied for oil drilling permits in the wash. The only time I was ever close to being in charge was when I foolishly would don my wetsuit in January and paddle out at Coast Guard Beach, or at 4 mile beach in Wellfleet after the rescue squad dragged another kid out of the water, and they were screaming at me that they weren't coming back.
Surfers, I have personally have not had a problem with, but windsurfers and kyakers are somewhat arrogant when they want to be. When thirty people are casting metal in Edgartown harbor from Chappy beach and a kyaker paddles 100' to 125' away into the inner harbor he gets what he deserves. In baseball they call it a brushback. And what about the windsurfers who put their board and sail into the water and then go screaming by the end of the jetty (Tashmoo) your on just ten feet away across your retrieve.
With all the room out there, if someone asked me, I'd say no one is in charge. The only influence should be common courtesy/decency/fairplay/sportsmanship.

The point is "we were there first by a couple of hours". they put in around the corner (probably so they wouldn't have to walk by us) and paddled right out in front of us. To me this is just plain ignorant Like I said if they were there at low and waiting for the surf to rise I would have fished someplace else, but thinking they could just come down and just move in I THINK NOT.

Anyone who thinks they are in control when it comes to the ocean needs to sit under a large tree and really rethink life for a long time...

I came to where Newell Guy and BigFish were after the fact. I did not start casting into them. Even if fish showed up right where they were I would not cast into them.
If I am there first and there are fish GO SURF SOMEWERE ELSE or expect a plug upside your head (special hookless ignorant surfer model).
Have a nice day.
What's up Newell Guy. You been back?

With all the media hype and cheap overseas import boards the beaches are loaded with newbees or wannabees lately. I have never seen so many girls in the water surfing as this season. Some of these newcomers don't even give common courtesy to their fellow watermen never mind people on the shore. I can't comment on the incident in question as I don't know the area. With beach breaks it is easy to move down the beach a bit but with rock or reef breaks the lineup surfers ride is pretty set. Sounds like poor judgement if they camped right in front of guys fishing.

Arrived at this North shore locale last summer with gear and a windsurfer. This is the West side of Great Point in a SW'er(15-20kts). With no one there I decided to go for a ride and then fish.

This guy (locale blue slayer!) showed up and I thought I might piss him off because the fish were heavy here. When I came in I apologized for ripping through the fishing area and he said "Don't worry. It looks like you were having a blast !).

By the time I unrigged and got fishing it was dusk and the Bass showed up.

We ALL got along.

And then on this day NO ONE WAS THERE except a friend with a camera.

Probably pretty good fishing somewhere around the island. 30 + kts and NW in October !

It was a ripping fun day. To blown out for conventional surfing.
