Talking Surf Howdy

red head with pearl white tomorrow the pogie Bern-ster is going to play out in the surf

I'd like a moment of silence for a pogie surf howdy that rushed bravely into battle as my st00pid bail slammed shut I'm going to dremel that bail off tonight

Domination takes full concentration..

no way it just isnt the same Larry. Its good to support fellow fisherman, I fish everyones stuff, bugger, hab, some of bm's stuff, jigmans, winchmaster, hatchet mac's, and bernzy's and I could never copy any of their stuff. they've put the time into the design I cant just copy it It sucks the fun outta it I'd rather just support them In the limited fashion that I can at times Know what I mean?

As someoone who makes a handmade product every day it burns me up to see guys copying peoples plug designs. I admit i have done it, but I use that as a referance point to make my own design...

Find your own voice bigfish and people will listen.. And think about it, catching a fish on a plug that you made and DESIGNED is so much better than catching on a plug that you made as a copy....

I think you'd have to really know what you're doing anyway to copy a plug exactly. I tried to copy a 2 ounce Habs last winter, and while I really like how they turned out they don't behave at all like a Habs. They're a completly different plug actually...

Not to go off topic but nobody here has invented anything new guys....needlefish, pikies, jointeds, danny's, pencils, howdy's, swimmers.....its all been done and everyone here has copied it before or given it their own twist. I spend more on plugs than most....but I will make plenty on my own and give them my own take......still its all been done before. Bernzy makes some of the finest plugs I have yet seen or used.

Thanks for the kind words. The success of the "Surf Howdy" is because of the people fishing it.
It is, however, very loosely based on an old, plastic freshwater design. I kept the same basic shape ( except that the original had flat sides) made it out of wood also weighted it differently and substantially increased the size. Other than that it is the same lure that someone else invented

Anyway, thanks for your support. Joe@ Surfcasting RI will have a supply of the original "Surf Howdy's" and the NEW "Big Howdy" next week.

Years ago I converted all of my Penn spining reels with "automatic" bail to a manual bail pick-up. The Surfcaster sold these kits. This helped but then I realized that these Penn reels were too heavy to use with my new graphite rods.

That's when I switched to Van Staal reels. Models 100 and 150. I never looked back.

Bernzy, I got the samples in, will yap tomorrow, just came up from cave.
Bernzys plug is a proven fish catcher as allot of You know, when I fish some thing and like it I yap about it. I make a squid plug that has caught a ton of fish and has been tested ,so now I have a few and the Ho eben has 1 what has spawned from that is a pencil type squid that is longer . its in the action and the ease of use and tweaking of a plug that is my reward. I cant wait to paint this new plug and trash it next year.
I was working on Danny's for a year or so but wanted them to stay on top, I was looking in others bags and seeing how the plugs were tuned and noticed the sacrifice made on action to keep the lure up. ?not bad on a solid color? but you will run into trouble on multi colored plugs,
so I made the body fatter and tweaked and cam up with the phat boy that has caught me bass to 40 lbs.
I have some needles and I have came up with a needle that floats at rest and will swim and dart when retrieved
and a few other choice needles that are hard to make yet swim and catch very well. For those who have fished with me or chartered You may have seen a yellow plug in my bag and that is the best swimmer I have in My cave, simple Yet long to make.
I guess Im lucky to come up with this stuff and the copy thing can get old and kinda hurts when You see Your work being sold.
But its a form of flattery. when I look for a plug I look at the fisherman behind the plug. and for those who make there own and test and tweak good for You for the reward is far greater and ruff looking plugs made By a guy who can whoop on fish is better than a copy'd lure with the weighting all frigged up, cause in the end its the bent rod that counts.
have I been holding back on eye candy
this can relate to fishing ,it was taboo to talk about places and all of us sneak's around. the Falmouth crew of the 80's and early 90's. #^&#^&#^&#^& I drove by one of my best friend for almost a decade with huge fish in may and June until we talked. and it wasn't about where it was where to get bait and dirt roads along with tides. and shared info and each others word.
the point is once again research out Your own thing, Me I did it with a map and a chart both from boat and shore. do I know every thing ,,,,Nope..... never will.
But I will say a beach that allot of guys sucked last year put out if You knew where to fish and it was common sense to fish that flat pc of crap sand in the steepest drop off
