Been doing some turnin and carvin

Some Hahn style dannys. 1.1 oz AYC. Bottom is a regular style danny. 1.5 oz from Red Cedar. Thanks JPI

Some hand carves. Around 4 inches long. Wide ones are around .9 oz, thinner ones around 3/4 oz. Lexan lips on both. Wide ones will slow wake on the surface or dig about 4 feet. The other ones dig around 4 feet. Both have a nice wobble to them. Gizzard Shad patterns for the local Hybrids

Tagger, lips are 1/16 inch lexan. I did those by hand too. Did not see quite what I wanted in the catalogs. I made up a template for the bodies and the lips so I can cut them close every time. Once you get the hang of those hand carves, they are not that hard to do, just time consuming.

YS, used a section of wire for the tails. Formed a loop to allow for attachment.

I find many large hanging off my tail hooks....don't lose many either.

Stripers are headhunters, they'll typically hit the head of the plug, not the tail. Almost all of my stripers have been on the front hook. Most of the time that they are on the tail hook, that hook is in the side of the fish. May have hit the front hook and pulled that out during the fight

With two belly hooks, I figure a third is overkill. More likely to catch me than a fish

Personal preference mostly

May be in the future. I still have plenty to learn on making these. Wouldn't want to post a how too and provide bad info. The basics, as I do them are:

1) draw your pattern on the wood
2) cut out the shape on the bandsaw, including lip slot
3) drill screw eyes and weight holes (be sure they are EXACTLY centered)
4) knock off the edges with a beltsander
5) sand to shape by hand
6) cut lip out of lexan and sand to final shape
7) tank test to determine the amount of weight needed (right behind the hook in this case. Plug sits flat in the water with about 1/4 of the back showing
8) make any adjustments that are needed
9) test cast to make sure it swims right, and make adjustments if needed
10) let dry out then seal, prime, paint, clear coat as usual.

Trial and error on the lip style/size. That is one of the things I'm still messing with. Rounded lips tend to give more action to the plug. Squared off lips deflect better of objects in the water. The angle of the lip probably has a lot to do with the action/depth the plug will run. A lip coming straight out of the plug will dive deeper than one with a greater angle (like the ones I did). You also have to consider the size/shape of the plug and the location of the weight. Those are some basics, I still have a bunch to learn on this type of plug.
