Casting **( only going out 5ft or so )**

I got my new flyfishing setup. It's a 9'ft I went to cast it out, and it went out only about 5ft or so. The current took the line right after I pulled it off the reel. What's wrong??

Plum, I know you're gonna think I'm pickin' on you, but have you ever seen anyone flycast before?

It sounds like you just tried to cast just like a spinning or casting outfit.

Wait for the video... or watch the movie "A river runs through it"

Your fly reel is only used to store your line. You strip line from the reel and use the rod like a pendulum. Its all about rhythm and timing.

What weight outfit did you get? And what about line... floating-sinking... and taper? Make sure you match these things to the type of fishing you want to do.

My friend told me the fly & line should be in the air when I'm slowly letting alittle line out each time, and then the fly and line goes into the water ONCE I have enough line out.....Does this sound correct? My friend took a six hour class, so I would believe it's correct.

PS:

My friend took a flyfishing lesson....
They told me to take out like 20ft of line...put it on the ground in front of me. Then grab the line with my left hand, while swing the pole forward & back....each time letting alittle line out. So I do this until I get the full 20ft out..then cast out with the fly...so in other words. My fly only hits the water ONCE, during all this..

Plum, think of it as casting the line not the lure. You want to basicly work the line back and forth in the air a few casts and when you have a decent amount of line out kind of shoot it out and let it hit the water. I'm sure you'll get it. The big thing is to le tthe rod do the work. If you practice in a field you can learn to cast without the water messing up your concentration.

Try casting a small piece of yarn and leave the flies at home a while.

Good luck, fly fishing the surf is a little more than I am ready to take on right now, but a few sunnies are right up my alley.

Think of the rod as a bull whip. Like Indiana Jones you work the rod, getting the right rythem. It takes alot of practice, to cat the line and let it unroll. It's all in the timing.

I would have to agree with Fishpart.

Casting out of the water without a hook, is a great way to learn how to cast. It is a little more forgiving, and it usually is less windy which will help you get your casting down.
