Curious if anyone goes to the trouble of filing for a tax rebate on gas. I've never bothered due to a realatively small ($400-$700) yearly gas bill, is it worth the effort, what is the percentage of the rebate. I gas up at a pump with the boat in tow, how would you ever document that gas is going into a boat and not the tow vehicle?

I've not done this either but ogten thought about it. I'd like to hear from someone that has done it as well. With the price of gas these days every little bit helps.

for 700 it's not worth it. I submitted about 3500 in receipts to get about 65 dollars back.

I used to do it when we towed the boat. I think one year I got 25 back. Not much but it bought some bait for fishing

Do you file for this as something itemized when you do your yearly taxes or is this tax separate?

You file seperately from your taxes. Rebate expenses have to be less than 6 months old (any 6 month period, say May to October). Rebate was MUCH better when gas was less ($1 vs $3), as you have to net a 5% tax against the 21 cent per gallon rebate (which, doesn't sound bad but when you do the math, it essentially guts the rebate). Net, today, its a PITA for the $$ effort involved.

I am definately going to take advantage of it. With what I pay
in taxes, I want some of it back. Plus a few slips from the truck might happen to fall in the pile (opps did I type that out loud)!!

If you purchase highway fuel in Massachusetts for use in your boat, you can claim a refund on the gas tax. The tax is 21¢/gallon; the refund will factor in a 5% use tax. You must file the claim within 6 months after the purchase date of gasoline, or within two years of the purchase date of diesel fuel.

Go to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue website page for tax forms. Select the form you want to use:

Gasoline: GT-9M (Gasoline Tax Refund Application-Watercraft Use)
Diesel: SFT-9 (Special Fuels Refund Application).
Attach original purchase invoices to the completed form and mail the documents to:

Massachusetts Department of Revenue
PO Box 7012
Boston MA 02204

$700 gets me a fill up on my Parker and 1/2 a tank in the Ave Maria!
And we fill up every 2 weeks on average staying local,

never even heard of anyone doing it, i pump my gas from the car gas station and fill the boat up using a bunch of containers, always beats the gas docks

Assume your $700 in annual gas equals 233 gallons ($3/gallon). 233 gals x $0.21 rebate per gallon = $48.93, minus ($700 x $0.05 per gallon tax or $35). $48.93-$35= $13.93 rebate. You have to save every receipt that has to have station name and code, then write down each date, gallons and amount on the rebate form, mail in $0.43 stamp to save $13.93 (minus stamp) $13.50 a year.

Sounds like it's not even worth it unless the bill gets up over $1000. I wish I were fishing that much, but I'm a weekend warrior and the 4 stroke keeps it down.

I do it got $56 back this year not much but it is easy to do and it buys me some new braid or flourocarbon every year.

I did this a few years back...it's not difficult, just not sure if its worth the hassle. I haven't bothered the last few years.

FYI - I started getting yearly excise tax bills ever since I received my first rebate check. Not sure if there is a correlation or not, all I know is that I was never charged excise on the boat prior to that...now I get one from the city of Boston every year.

Could be a coincidence, but something to think about it you're not paying excise tax on the boat now...
