Oil makes the world go round.
If Iran did attempt to close the Strait of Hormuz, the price of oil probably would skyrocket. At the same time, it would mean the complete and utter destruction of Iran. All the backing from Russia and China isn't going to help them when the entire Western World comes down on Iran.
Already in financial shambles and at a tipping point of financial collapse, the resulting oil prices if Iran closed the Strait (I read reports that estimated oil to reach $125-150/barrel if this occurred) would quickly bankrupt most of Europe if not "resolved" quickly.
That shipping lane is probably the best point of reference as to why we need to get off of Middle East oil. Renewable sources certainly aren't more economical at the moment, but there is something to be said for the potential boost in economic stability.

We need to stop burning oil in cars and for heat. There's tons of natural gas around. In Korea , its common place to pull up to a pump and fill up with LPG or LNG at a self serve station. We need to stasrt that here. We need to figure out better ways to burn coal. There is a lot of fossil fuel around. We need to get goingf on using other forms besides oil.

Household electricity bills skyrocket

Electric bills have skyrocketed in the last five years, a sharp reversal from a quarter-century when Americans enjoyed stable power bills even as they used more electricity.
Households paid a record $1,419 on average for electricity in 2010, the fifth consecutive yearly increase above the inflation rate, a USA TODAY analysis of government data found. The jump has added about $300 a year to what households pay for electricity. That's the largest sustained increase since a run-up in electricity prices during the 1970s.
Electricty is consuming a greater share of Americans' after-tax income than at any time since 1996 — about $1.50 of every $100 in income at a time when income growth has stagnated, a USA TODAY analysis of Bureau of Economic Analysis data found.
Prices are climbing, too, hitting a record 11.8 cents per residential kilowatt hour so far this year, reports the Energy Information Administration.

it stays spot on. I beat them up and no escalator...$72 a month for 6800kwh a year. 20 years.
