Those Sea Sucker accessories are pretty pricey. I used to have some of their rod holders. They worked great for a while but they gradually lost their effectiveness. I don't know if they've improved the quality or not (I heard they did, but not sure), but based on my experience, I would have reservations.

We carried them for a while and I'm afraid I'd have to report the same thing.

Don't know if it was a defective batch of suction cups or what.

I think with the set I had, the durometer of the rubber suction cup gradually increased and lost it's effectiveness through hardness. The rubber wasn't soft enough to create and maintain that good seal.

Why: "Taking my Ipad to sea"?

You should be fishing not surfing the WEB or posting on Facebook!

What is resistance of an iPad to saltwater exposure? On the internal battery? Touch screens don't work well with saltwater wet fingers.

Given the diversity of the human species, there is no “normal” human genome sequence. We are all mutants.

You are exactly right. iPads are not weather resistant, don't particularly like wet conditions and are very adverse to saltwater. I wouldn't take a $700 iPad on my boat. You smartphone gives you the same capabilities without the added instability and lack of ruggedness.

No boat, back in the suds.

Another good point.

As someone who is in the mobile tech business (developing mCommerce apps), I am always amazed at what people want to do with the technology. Some of it is really innovative and good. Others, such as taking an iPad on a boat are just wrong. Now if you have a Panasonic Rugged laptop, I'd say go for it. Meets military specs and is pretty near indestructible.

iPads are not meant for that type of abuse. You will literally fry the touch screen with saltwater and sunlight. The port that you use to charge the iPad isn't covered either. Get saltwater in it and it will seep into all the other components.

There is a waterproof case made for the iPad 2 by TrendyDigital but we have not stress tested them as of yet. I do not believe the iPad touch screen works when it is in the case so you will still need to expose it to the elements to use it.

No boat, back in the suds.
