Question Modifications: Loading Swimming Plugs

Been reading around re: loading plastic swimming plugs like bombers and redfins.

Just a few quick questions to those in the know...

-I'm just curious what most of you guys think about the "filler" materials such as fresh water, cooking oil or solid stuff like bb's and lead shot (given environmental and health concerns mercury is obviously not under consideration).

-At first glance the liquid stuff (water, oil) strikes me as most likely to leak. On the other hand, injecting a few cc's of the stuff via hypodermic through the head of the plug sounds like the easiest way to load these things without too much work.

-The solid stuff (bb's, shot) seem to get around the problem of leakage, however, getting it into the plug seems to be more of a challenge, as well as "sewing it back up."

I am more than willing to experiment, just wanted to get some surgical "pointers" before I pull a Mengele on some expensive plugs.

Hey Ben...load them with Bunka oil and then hope it leaks. Just hopefully not in your plug bag

WeeWee - i load my bombers for use on the river in the spring with baby oil. i melt a hole in the nose with a hot nail, fill the desired CC's with a hypodermic needle, and then fill back over the hole with a two part paste epoxy. i then put masking tape over the epoxy/hole and let it sit overnight to cure. i haven't had one leak in about 3-4 years doing it that way.

Went to a seminar this spring and the presenter said to use mineral oil/baby oil. He also claimed that the oil slows the wobble of the lure. One of his specials was a clear body with glitter added to the oil. What part of the baby does the oil come from?

I ben usin a sharpened piece of 3/32 weld wire to melt the hole-on the back down towards the ass of the lure-usually a cc redfin. then I put it in a sink full of water and rap it against the side to let air out and water in, when the lure sits with the nose pointing up @ 45 degrees I say outloud, "you're loaded", and seal it back up with a hot butter knife-don't tell the old lady-then put a drop of zappagap to smooth the profile
done me rite sofar

Is it good, or is it Sofa King good?

I used water and epoxy the holes back up. I can always pop out the epoxy and +/- the water. Works well.

Cool

So I walked into a surgical supply place today to pick up some 25 cc syringes.

I got some dirty looks at the counter. Folks ask me if I want them with or without the needles.

They wouldn't sell them to me with the needles and asked me what I planned on doing with them. I said it was for my fishing lures.

"Uh huh."

So now I got a box of 25 syringes (w/o needles).

If anyone wants a syringe to load some swimmers just swing by the cookout this Saturday - they're going for a $1.00.

Also, I'm going to give oil a try - specifically mineral oil (pharmaceutical grade). It's basically baby oil without the scent (I figure the scent is not a good thing). Very cheap, look it up in the laxative section of your drugstore or Wally World.
