Mass DEP - getting it done

And so it continues…

On Saturday, June 7, 2015, the Mattapoisett Harbormaster and Shellfish Warden observed three adult males aboard a 12-foot dinghy equipped with an engine, with fishing gear, several large coolers, and bags containing fish onboard. The Harbormaster approached the vessel and observed what appeared to be a significant amount of Sea Bass aboard and subsequently contacted the Massachusetts Environmental Police. MEP officers responded and inspected the catch. The inspection showed the fishermen possessed 198 Sea Bass over the legal limit, 48 of which were undersized.

The catch, fishing gear, and vessel were seized; the catch was donated to the Salvation Army.

Good catch by the cops. Those images make me sick. Also makes you wonder how many are out there doing the same thing and NOT getting caught?

Where was Moe? It's quite obvious that Larry and Curly left him behind.....
(sorry, just re-read it....so Moe was on the boat!!)

All that on a 12' dinghy??? And they were hoping to fly under the radar?
Had to be dumb, dumber and dumbest.....would love to put a face to these three, just to see what stupid looks like.

3 guys and hundreds of pounds of fish in a 12' dinghy. Too bad the wind didn't go hard SW while they were out on the Bay.

That was my first thought when I read the story. Nothing to see here just a 12 fter up to the gunwales in water. Just out for a pleasure cruise maybe catch one or two fish while we're out here

let's see their names and pics. also you know they're selling them- get them to roll on buyers. big fines, loss of fishing privileges, community service or pokey time. make an example of some of these clowns.

It's all well and good, but it still means that there are still hundreds of sea bass that no one else will be able to catch!

If the punishment isn't severe enough, it won't deter these a-holes from doing it again and again.

Remember that a $2,000.00 fine and loss of a $500.00 POS boat is nothing if they are poaching thousands of dollars more than that!

I am a legend in my own mind!

Just a hunch, but I'll bet the trailer was attached to an extra long windowed van. Just like the ones dropping off all my neighbors in the the Q at 3 am.

Do you think they had a saltwater license to begin with?

this is just sickening, but even if you take their licenses away it wont stop them. we need to take the dollar signs off the fishes heads to get this to ever stop

Its a good start. More needs to be done. If they want to get really real about this stuff they need to go after the buyers as much as the poachers.

I'm sure most of the fish in these past weeks that hit the papers are going to fish markets and restaurants and not just for personal consumption. Follow the trail of where these guys are selling to and shut those places down to too.

There are buyers and sellers and both need to be dealt with...you start shutting down places that buy these poached fish and the business end will get the message too...
