What might Block Island wind farm provide?

When my college buddies did our annual fall 6-pack trip to Block this October, we saw the wind farm structures a bit south of Block. They are fairly large structures.

Any speculation what those might attract for fishing? Could mahi come in that close? Could that be a good dive spot? How deep is the water there?

Counting the days...

Apparently the area attracted quite a few cod this winter.

Any chance they'd block boats from the area due to risk to the structures? Especially considering how polarizing they are

With the "supposed" increase in bird fatalities. the wind farm could provide an improved fishing situation, of course instead of live lining poggie, you would need to chunk with seagull parts just down current of the wind farm.

There's water and you might drown.

Low chance of encountering Muslim extremists or black thugs or gays seeking wedding cakes. I'd say go for it

I didn't appreciate the bright lights over the summer. Hopefully they will not be as bright when the project is completed.

Just stick close to the pregnant women living in poverty. Little chance you'll run into one.

Oh fun! I haven't been in the cess pool forum in years. Nice to see it leaking over this way! Definitely watch out for those planned parenthood workers hanging around the turbines, they might grab your rod and see if they can find any signs of crabs

No, no, no. we’re 30… 30, three zero.

In the February 18, 2016 edition of The Independent, Ray Bouchard III’s article laments the “unfortunate tradeoff” in closing the 150-year-old Black Point Fish Trap to make way for the sea cable installation project the will connect the Block Island Wind Farm to the mainland in Narragansett (Wind farm project shuts down fish trap).

Rich Fuka, president of Rhode Island Fisherman’s Alliance, repeatedly refers to the fish trap as being “shut down”. However, the article states that the fish trap is being moved to the Bass Rock area, which is just a bit northeast of Black Point. So which is it?

State DEM spokesperson Gail Mastrati indicates that the Black Point area will be “inoperable during and after construction of the cable installation and will remain off limits indefinitely”.

So, will there be boating / beach restrictions around where the cable comes to the land? I bet there will be.

Get ready for another navigational obstruction area at Bass Rock, and more rec fishing restrictions around Black Point and Bass Rock.

Smells fishy to me. Can't wait to not be able to fish from the boat at Bass Rock...

SweetD,
There is movement by the division to revise Fish trap Rules and Regs. Public Workshop and hearing scheduled for March 14th and 16th. I'll start another thread and post the documents.

It will suck is Black Point is off limits to shore fishing. It was nice when they opened it up to parking a couple years ago. The devil is in the details with a major project like the wind farm.

Everything is better on the rocks.
