MA river herring
Opening River Herring Spawning Runs (322 CMR 6.17)
New regulations were enacted that create standards for opening spawning runs to the harvest of river herring. For a spawning run to be opened, the run must have a Sustainable Management Plan that DMF has submitted to the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission. Such a plan requires a minimum of 10-years of demographic data and biological targets such as spawning stock biomass, fish passage counts, mortality rates, repeat spawning rations and juvenile abundances. At this time only the Nemasket Run in Middleborough and Lakeville has met the criteria for an ASMFC-approved plan. DMF will announce the future opening of spawning runs, but none will be opened in 2017

I predict chaos if only 2 or 3 runs are opened. Followed by horrible return rates and future spawning success. All or nothing should be the rule

One of the things we were adamant about over 10 years ago was a trigger clause to re-open them once a reasonable rate returned.
Would be nice to have live buckeys again, would be great not to eff them up again

If I can't fill a 55 gal. drum full of them in the back of the pickup and have them jumping out all over the highway as I race back to the ramp then keep it closed ;-)

They will dye all the herring from Middleboro green to prove they weren't taken elsewhere.
