Here's something to be grumpy about. I work on boilers and furnaces to keep people warm in winter or have hot water year round. When your heating man says you need a new unit PLEASE listen. Me or someone just like me will have to go to your house and try and find out why that piece of crap in your basement isn't working at whatever in the morning. I hope you freeze your petutty off, and we can't get parts til the next day. Those OLD burners are a pain in the butt. You can afford the new car, but not the new heating system, freeze you cheap bass-tards! You know my shower will be hot in the morning!

oh yeah I just got a price of $4000 to replace my 80s furnace and with the price of service calls on top of that . II just may get a chill . I CANT afford a new furnace not now and not in the near future . So if I have to I have a fireplace and a neighbors house I can use for firewood .

so you want to grump me too !

C'mon Argh - if everyone had brand new boilers what would you do. Just remember when you make them late night emergency calls to squeeze them tight

You would hate me, I got one of those big old cast iron jobs that used to be a coal burner ( I could throw the wife in there if I get grumpy enough)

It works surprisingly well, and easy to service - I never needed no grumpy old, rather-be-nappin wrench comin round scarin the kids and dogs.
Yup, had a tank in the ground. It started spitting water one night during a blizzard. Had to go to Cumby's and get 5 gals of diesal to run it. Put a tank in the cellar, dug up the old one, cut it up with a sawzall and took it to the dump.Didn't want any regulators snoopin around, Know what I mean? I do have a drum of sludge I don't know what to do with.
4000 bucks

, I could get a t-top and hydraulic steering for that.

Before the F2F hearing at the state house yesterday they were talking how a busted oil tank is NOT covered by mass homeowners insurance in many cases and the people testifying were saying how they had to shell out 6 figures to cleanup the envirnmental messes that resulted... That would cause grumpage!

I just throw another log in the stove.
Clean my own chimbly, the local sweeps out here get like $200 to run the brush and vacuam, in, out, in 45 minutes, $200 in the pocket.

Last year I had my 1960's replaced. About four grand, that was with central air switched from the old to the new.

That is good information JohnR and very accurate! 999 times out of 1000, homeowners insurance does not cover a tank disaster/cleanup!!! I have seen this happen many times, also seen people walk away from the house and default on the loan because the cost of the cleanup was more than the house was worth!!!! Food for thought everyone!

I replaced my tank (installed in 52 , had to move it anyway ) this summer for a few hundred . after they cut it they found a pin hole and rusted area around pin hole . I was able to avoid the big $ cleanup and the long lasting smell in my house . now we have new tank that will last another 50 or so years .

Yup, thats why I did mine myself. I figured (not sure if it's true), that if you hire someone to do it, and they find any leakage at all they are required to notify the proper hazmat type authorities?
But, I'll tell you getting those suckers out with just a shovel and an engine hoist is a b**ch. It had to be 8' long and 3' diameter, then slicing it up with a sawzall

It was a 30-pack job, easy

If any of you youngsters think it would be way cool to restore a 100+ year old house, just drop me a line - you'll be wishin you did.

Hey Bigfish, a question...I don't know how old my tank is but I do know that it's too big to get out of the cellar. You can cut it up , I know but how the #^&#^&#^&#^&ens do you get the new one in?

O.k. you guys will love this. I go to a guys house for an oil leak, figure it's from the tank filter not being tight enough. Well, in this dum dums basement there's oil on the ground longer spill wise longer than his tank and twice as wide. Says he noticed it a week ago. I look at him and say, how long ago? Thats right a week ago! So I clean up ALL the oil and find out his tank is leaking. On goes the magna patch. So the brain STURGEON calls his dad who owns the house. Daddy dearest says if you can't fix it I'm switching to gas! My military bearing kicks in and I don't tell him PLEASE do you cheap sob. Then he says can you put a tray or something under it? I tell the old RICHARD " sir you need a new tank" And if you switch to gas that's your perogative. BUT when you do, remember, GAS is more money than oil. Also if your mad at THE gas co. for anything they will tell you to shut up and pay your bill as we own you now, and we're the only game in town. If you have oil there are 5, maybe 6 co. in your area. Oh and the gas co. will not maintain it's units. I.E. no service calls. Ever try to get a plumber in the day time, how about at nite.....good luck! ALL I'm saying is have your system cleaned every year and if your soot sucker says you need a new unit.......LISTEN to him!

BackBeach Jake...yes we simply cut the old tank into a couple pieces, easier to get out and I gotta clean all the sludge out of it anyway. As far as getting a new tank in, I can get a standard size tank, 275 gallons, into most homes without too much trouble! If not then we can look at the alternative, they do make several other shorter and skinnier tanks for just such an occasion. If you have a question about fitting a tank in your basement, it is not as simple sometimes as just measuring the size of the tank and then measuring the door, there are other variables at work and I don't have time to type it all out. yeah the last time i listened ta some bs like this it was gonna run 4400,bull#^&#^&#^&#^&,a 10 dollar jet at the heating/plumbers supply and back in nice toasty heat.unfortunatly some people are too scared to learn from a book..

I was gonna let this tread die BUT, I saw the best one yet. O.K. no heat call in one zone. No problem! We have a house Habeeb the gas station owner has. Raised ranch with a garage. Now 6 apartments. Garage has 2 apartments heated by, get this, a water heater, and the water heater has no back flow preventer! So that means the water heater is mixing drinkable water with heating water, big no no. No permits, no nothing. Nice way to make people sick. Thanks you towel headed RICHARD!
