WOW!

This afternoon I was lamenting on the fact that I wont be running the rocks of narragansett until next spring, so I went down to Hazard ave just to look around, take in some sea air, watch the scoter ducks and loons play in the water, when all of a sudden, 100 feet in front of me, BOOM!!!! a 40 foot long finback whale breached straight out of the water, and came crashing down sending spray almost to my feet. I just stood there with my mouth wide open in amazement as this enoumous whale fed on what looked like herring for about an hour. Totally amazing, and the best part about it was the fact that I was the only one there to see it. I wish I had my camera, becasue it was un-believable how close to shore this whale was.. I guess it had the bait pinned up to the rocks. It moved south, so I jumped in my truck and headed it off at Newton ave and watched it some more.. Breaching, slapping its tail, spewing spray out it's blow-hole. Then I ralized how long I had ben gone from work and left it there.

totally amazing.... If any of you Rhode Island guys can get down there, it might hang around while there is still bait to be eaten.

This made my month! I'm going to look around on the web at whale pictures, just to make sure it was infact a Finback..

neat

God grant that I may live to fish until my dying day,
And when it comes to my last cast, I most humbly pray,
When in the Lord's safe landing net I'm peacefully asleep,
That in His mercy I be judged, as big enough to keep.

Yep, it was a finback. The whale I saw didn't breach out of the water as far as the one in this photo, but was doing the same thing... shoting straight up, arching its back and slamming down..

Eben, I lived in that old house on the corner of South Pier and Ocean rd. I was lucky enough to see the same thing a few years back. This whale stayed around the rockpile off Pier5 for about 45 minutes and then started up into the Bay. My first instinct was to grab the pole and heave, but then reality set in.

They sometimes breach and slap the water like that to stun the bait fish, then circle around to scoop them up. Ya, I know........too much Discovery Channel. It's off season though.

Yeah I'm still smiling about it. If I had a camera on me, I could have taken some amazing photos. There's a bunch of bait around the pier and south of that, so I really think this whale might stay around for a couple days... but who knows.
Scoth bonnet- A friend of mine lives in that building now. He's a surfer and loves it.

Scotch, A few years ago I wouldve been at the CG house chasing those boston girls around but the sunrises are incrediblly worth the small apartment and traffic.... plus no matter how bad parking is, I can always walk 45min and be at the mouth of the river.....

Eben, whale may come back.. gannets were busting bait 1/2 mile ENE of Monahans dock, so might be in the area still chasing herring... and/or mackeral....I'll probablly ride down there at lunch time, I'm only in Kingston right now.... Green explorer, probably will have on a brown and black plaid flannel
