Insane trip yesterday in CT river for stripers

Took my youngest (age 11, he likes fishing but doesn't love it) with Capt Mike Roy's Reel Cast Charters out of Old Saybrook. What a day!

The boat, a brand new Conch 27, is a dream to fish out of. The fishing gear is absolutely top notch. Captain Andrew (works with Mike) was awesome, knew his stuff and was fantastic with my son. My youngest son is kind of a shy, book-ish kid, so Andrew talked softly and slowly and explained all the electronics and how everything works, the perfect approach to take with my son.

Fishing was awesome. As we went looking for pogies in a marina, he found a school on his electronics, threw the cast net, and pulled up 40 pogies and 3 keeper stripers in the cast net, He had never seen that before. Very cool to see.

Non stop action from then on, for 5 hours. Non stop. We caught bass livelining pogies in shallow water with no weight. We caught bass 3-waying in deeper water. We caught bass that were busting on top with surface plugs.

Just a few pics. But I can't recommend Mike Roy enough. We didn't go 10 minutes without a hookup for 5 hours.

First pic shows the contents of the cast net, hopefully you can see 3 bass in there.

we caught dozens and dozens. Nothing over 25 pounds, but non stop action.

for sure. doesn’t happen every day that i’m surrounded by hungry aggressive bass for 5 straight hours. Great way to show a kid what fishing can be.

i have 3 sons, very different from each other. My oldest is 16, and he loves ( loved fishing), he’s was the one of the 3 who always wanted to go no matter what. get up at 2 am, stay up until 2 am, drive 3 hours, whatever. he loved it, and i loved fishing with him. But he’s 16, plays 3 sports, loves hanging out with his friends, and has a girlfriend. so fishing is a lot less cool in his eyes than it was 2 years ago. it’s healthy i know and normal, but man it sucks!

my younger 2 are 12 and 11, and they don’t love it, but they like it. hopefully this trip helped him like it a little more.
