Drag settings
Setting some of my Tuna spinning reels up
Most of what I read suggests 20% of your leader not main line for the drag in Lbs
So I set them up with a scale at 10lbs 50lb leader (pulled till the drag slipped)
Then I took the rod attached the main line to a stationary object pulled back on the Rod till the drag slipped .
OMG i don’t think I could hang on if I was hooked up even with a football tuna .. what am I missing or is 10 pounds overkill for stand up spinning
All carbons drag washer lightly greased

Did you adjust the 10’pounds with the reel on the rod. All the guides add to the drag. It still is allot thou. A workout hangin on.

yes all of that I dialed it back to 6ish seem more manageable.. guess I'll really only know is if i hook up don't want a runaway nor do I want to try to muscle one 
Just can see 16lbs of drag on a spinning rod if your running 80lb leader . using the 20% rule |

They are powerful fish, 10 pounds isn’t all that much.
When I jig the canal with spinning gear, my drag is set at 11 pounds. I remember years ago I was out at Race point on the Beach one morning using my canal rod because I was sick of seals taking my fish and plugs. I had my Saltiga set at 25 pounds. Got a bass in almost to shore and a horse head seal grabs it, I stood that seal on his head thought the rod was going to explode, he came up out of the water must have been pissed he couldn’t swim away with a meal and shook his head with the bass in his mouth, line parted because I refused to bow to him.

Can I handle the physical forces that the drag settings will create?
That’s my biggest issue because I am no Gym rat

tuna spinning is typically 16-18 pounds. if you cant hanle 10 pounds dont bother using spinning gear. get a harness and start trolling

Not sure if I can handle 16 18 lbs of drag because I’ve never caught a 50in tuna on spinning gear just small er ones lol
