Chef..
Depends on what plugs and why... some of my best plug are beat to Chit... but still catch fish.... but if you want/need to.... sand em down to wood... prime with Bin or something similar... scuff that coat... prime again... scuff that coat lightly... paint it.. (I like rustoleum cans) then let it dry for a day or two minimum... then epoxy it.. thats how I do it..... others probably have different ideas....

Chef,
paul makes a good point...
I've f'ed up more old plugs than I'd like to remember by refinishing them... if they have some lost paint etc they've been fished and have some good mojo already... I'd leave em... or post a pic here and see what people think....
And dont send em to paul, he lives way up north... I'll take em
oh and chef... check ya PM's

Bryan, you dog you. Givin away secrets. I agree with Bryan. Some of my plugs look like they went thru a blender. Missing eyes, paint scrubbed almost completely off and they still produce. My advise is, unless this paint is completely gon, just change the hooks sharpen them and go bang some big uns.

I have a needlefish that I made about 4 years ago. It's white and yellow with a little red on the chin. last year, it produced 5 fish over 20# and one 27# at Fresh Pond Rock. If you looked at this plug you wouldn't think it would catch anything but the more beatup it gets the better the Bass like it.

I've got a theory on the beat up plug factor... Its beat up because you used it alot.. You used it alot because it caught fish... Why is it still catching even after the paint is beat to hell?? because its the action that fish are after, not so much the paint job. Paint jobs catch fishermen.
now wheres my airbrush?

Yeah.. thats the nail on the head... my paint jobs never come out anywhere close to perfect... I like simple colors/schemes...
Action, shape and location are number 1...
Welcome back from the glass show....

Thanks guys, i think ill just leave the plug be, its beat up , but not dead. Got new hooks yesterday and a split ring plyers at the saltwater edge, where i also saw IRON MIKE.I drove past the shop on the way to the Mews yesterday Eben, looks sweet bro. The glass station is a great play on words, shop looks like it was an old gas station. Ill be stopping in to check out your wares next time i roll through that way. Do you guys blow glass where you can watch from the retail store? I cant wait till i have some money so i can make my own plugs! What kind of investment would i need to make to get turning out some plugs?

I bought a grizzly lathe and a scroll saw used (from Bassmaster) for $100.00....set of gouges $30.00....30' of AYC $35.00....plug hardware $30.00.....price of fish catching, homemade plugs.....yep, you guessed it....PRICELESS.

Seriously, it won't be too bad....I still gotta buy an air brush setup and thats it. Time for fun.

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

A cheferson, glad you like the shop..Its a lot of work, but its worth it.

If you were interested in getting into plugbuilding, I'd surf ebay and look for midi lathes, tabletop bandsaws and drill presses.... maybe even a tabletop belt sander, small air compressor and an airbrush.
If you have family close by, give them fish all summer, and just before christmas tell them you want to build plugs and you need tools..... then throw out the ol' "If I make my own plugs, I'll catch more fish for you"..

worked for me:

Looked like some serious craftsmenship, how long did the big one take to make?

if you go here and scroll down you'll see a pif of the big one...

the one I was going to make for capesams is smaller... say, the size of a real squid.. you'll have to come up with your own stand...

How about those 3 tattoo darters if they are in good shape???
