Cheferson, he is speakimg about the "Pins" in the top of the rock. They are what remains of the large steel bolts that were hand set into the rock, many years ago, by hard working fishing Guide Persons, who made their lively hood from taking care that rich folks would catch Striped Bass.
These rocks pepper the shore of a very special place on this earth. A place known for the Striped Bass that frequent it's shores.
In the late 1800's men of wealth would come in season to this place and the Natives would chop up bushels of Lobsters and walk out on narrow structures that were bolted into the rocks. The Natives would spread the broken Lobster chum around the ends of these Fish Stands so that at the appointed hours of fishing, the fish would be there to eat. The Fisherman would come out onto the narrow planked stand and cast his hook to the surrounding waters. The hook would be baited with a whole Lobster tail or body, crushed for the occasion by the Native Guides.

Goose was lamenting that the Natives had not used Stainless Steel rod for the bolts that were driven into tapered holes, hand drilled into the rocks. I suspect that had there been Stainless Steel Bolts there, our friend Goose and others that know this sacred ground would go there even now and rebuild the stands that were there low those many years ago.

I received a PM regarding where the Rock is that is shown in the photo posted by Goose. The reply to the question posed to me is posted here for all to see.


"There are places all along the Striper Coast that show the foot prints of those who came before us.

Newport, West Island, Sakonnett Point, along the Elizabeths, The Vineyard.
Where the fish of old days came to feed, the Bass Stands stood as monuments to those who fished for them."

We have to remember that all along the Striper Coast those who sought to catch the wily bass would do what was neccesary to gain the prize.

Eben shows a photo from long ago. Some have had the thrill to finger the pages of some of the Day Journals of long ago and been in the hallowed halls where these early fishermen ate and slept, drank and smoked and told stories of fishes caught, and about the one's that got away.
Remember, these were in the days before engine powered boats that could carry the fisherman to his prize. In the etching that Eban posted, note the sea conditions. Would any one attempt to bring an oar powered boat into those waters to search out the Striped Bass? I think not? The Reels and Rods used in these early days of sporting were not of the caliber to cast out a couple hundred feet. There were no Star Drag brake to hold a surge, no level wind, no braided line.
Note the "Gaffer" below the stand, open to the surf, in place to bring the caught fish to the land. Are any of us up to such a position today?

Duh.. silly geologist that I am I look at the texture drawn in the rock first.. didnt notice the horizon, but it does confirm me suspicion...

absolutely!! With gear like that it would be the fight of a lifetime. The question I have is this.. would they be up to fishing the way we do? and how do you think they would do??

I think their bait bills would be rather high for starters...
