Race Point Sold Out In 7 Days!
The phone message at the Race Point station currently has a message that states that as of April 17 at 8:30 am, they have only 133 permits left for sale! I am gonna go out on a limb and say that they sold all those yesterday!

The whole beach permit thing has gotten completely out of hand. I fished the back beaches for the last 30 years and last year it was such a zoo I decided not to get the permit this year.
It's not the fishermen. It's the folks who want a day at the beach complete with cabanas, grills, float tubes etc. Don't get me wrong, they have as much right as I do to be on the beach but I feel some type of concession should be made to the fishing community. Maybe 2 different types of permits and I am not sure how it would be enforced either.
The weekly permit is even worse. last year, if you were not in the lot by 5 AM, you were out of luck
So this year, I will not fight the battle. Fish the parking lots and walk alot. It a healther way to fish anyway.

It is. especially up at the Second Rip or the telephone poles. Sometimes there is no place to park on the shore. last year in August from the beginning of the Back to the Mission Bell was wall to wall all day and most of the night.

When do the bird closures begin, to add to the traffic jam? And when do they end?

Usually they start in late May or early June and go until the birds can fly. As early as late July or as late as 3rd week in August.
The sad part about the whole thing is the coyotes and skunks and foxes and eagles and hawks all take their toll. The fishermen don't run the damn birds over. It's the environmentalist way of exercising their might.
