Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Fish update from M.V.; Extra large Albies for this time of year. Plenty of keepers already. Large Bonito, extremenly large Spanish Mackeral, King Mackeral and Fluke in the 25-26" range.

You would be well advised to bring some short 6"steel leaders as the Spanish Mack's are doing a number on our lures.

Large schools of Albies everywhere, Edgartown Harbor, the gut, the bridges @ State Beach and the draw bridge in Vineyard Haven. There seems to be fish everywhere.

Alot of our friends from Mass. Stripe Bass. will be coming soon and the Derby should have a good turnout from our Club- over 40 people!!!

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Sundays Vineyard Fishing report: For 5 days, the wind was blowing from the Southwest and the fishing was unbelievable. Today the wind shifted around and we're coming up on a full moon so the water was full of weed today. We took the boat out for 9 hours saw alot of schools of small albies, must be new fish arriving, they were very small. We were into the schools alot, but they just wouldn't take anything.
The lures of choice this year seem to be the Deadly #^&#^&#^&#^& Green and the broken back rebel. The Yozuri crystal minnow stillholding its own. We hear of large stripers being taken on the North shore, 12lb Blues at East and West Chop. Until tomorrow

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hi John R. and my very dear friend, Fisherwoman.
Great talking with you today Yellowbelly. Well, we started out at 5AM at Memorial Wharf in Edgartown and all we got was weed. 2 hours later, they were busting out of reach. Fished a few more hours and the fish just wouldn't come in close enough.

We proceeded to go back to the house and get the boat and head from Oak Bluffs, to Vineyard Haven, West Chop, Middle Ground. Tashmoo, Menemsha then on
to Gay Head. NO FISH
Heading back and going into Vineyard Harbor, we ran into fish at the jetties. So close to the boat that Te Big Catch , was into them with his flyrod. No hook-ups. They skunked us today.

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hey there guys,
Squidmamma we will see you on the 25th. Thanks for the results. It will give me something to think about while on the beach in Aruba. Kelly is willing to let me go fishing while we are in Aruba also. How can you beat that??? Honeymoon, fishing and great friends for two weeks straight. I will be in heaven in two short days.

John R.- Sorry but we will be there the week before you. I have asked Kelly to leave some fish for you. You may have to ask Fisherwoman and Baitcaster to do the same.

Fisherwoman & Baitcaster: We will at least talk to you before the wedding. I saw you this morning on the way to work. I hope you had a good day. We will try to stop by the house.

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hi Everyone. Raining like heck. Haven't been able to hook up the past few days from shore. They're in bigtime at Memorial Wharf along with some Spanish Mackeral. Only 2 small Albies landed yesterday from the Wharf along with a good size Spanish Mackeral. Albis caught on Swedish Pimples. There was so much bait fish, they busted at the drop of my lure, and of course, they went for the bait. Oh well. Fisherwomen, you're gonna have a ball. Just the sound of ya line Zzzzziiiiiiiiinnnnnnnggggg!!!!!

More stats on the derby:

Only 2 changes- rest are the same

Shore Bass now 26.09
Shore Blue now 11.71

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Derby Minimum Sizes

Bass 34"
Bluefish 22"
Bonito 21"
Albies 25"

The afternoon of fishing was wonderful. The first time we both hooked up, I lost mine because I didn't set the hook and Rolands was 23" Albie. The PM was awesome after that, but no keepers

A couple of weakfish were caught. I've been told they haven't been around these parts in years.
The MSBA crew will be down soon YEAH!!!!

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Well,we fished with the best today, Charlie Cinto and Janet Messimo. They're such super people. NOTHING betweeen the 4 of us. The small albies were there, but just not taking anything. Then we went to Edgartown Light, so much bait, they weren't interested in what we were throwing, but we saw a wedding on the beach at the foot of the lighthouse NEAT! Then we went to Memorial Wharf where they were EVERYWHERE, just cruising up and down, as far down as the Yachtclub and on the other side of the ferry. Just going back and forth ALL day. Of ALL the people there, not 1 hook up. Then we went to the big bridge, nothing happening. Did hear that a woman caught a 14lb Bonito at Memensha, and WAS NOT in the derby. Oh well tomorrows another day.

On a non-fishing note, I had the pleasure of going out on Walter Chronkites 60ft Sailboat and PARTY in his house. What a trip. I just kept saying "I can't believe I'm in his house and boat" A friend of mine, on island, introduced us to their cook and we've corresponded ever since. THAT WAS JUST SO COOL!!
I'm also hearing that the big guy and myself will be invited over to his house soon for a dinner gathering. Can't wait. See ya's

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hey squidder,
How is the "M.S.B.A. NO PAIN TOUR 2000" going? With all the off-islanders, you know people other than you and the big catch, on the island is everything O.K. I suppose the baitcaster and fisherwoman have caught 100 or so fish allready, and its only Monday. Seriously say hello to everyone. I'm looking forward to seeing all those happy faces at 4 a.m. every morning when they get up. But they really should have been up all night and not have to be woken at 4 a.m. to go fishing. But that's what happens when your on a guided tour of the Vineyard right. Some of those people still have to have someone bait their hooks.
Tight lines and say hello to Walter for me.
Frank

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hi Frankie
Roland caught 4 fish yesterday in the boat right in front of the windmill at the Gut and I caught 2. Very small. First day Jules was here didn't catch anything. Bill caught 2 or 3. Yesterda afternoon, Rolo called their house and they were still out fishing. Her aunt told him between the 12 of them fishing, only 5 fish were caught and I know she got at least one. The Albies are very small. Schools all over the place. Numerous fish under the min. size.
A big Bonito was caught yesterday off Memorial Wharf with live store bought squid. Rolo and I fished the bigbridge the other AM, schools all over, 25 guys, NOT one pickup. I must have gone thru 7 different lures. Weren't taking anything. Oh well. Will try to get info from the troops and et you know. Take care and see you soon

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Hi John, Thanks for the kind words. The M.S.B.A. No Pain 2000 Tour, has got off to a slow start. Jules has only caught about 3-4 as well as other people. The fish aren't looking at anythng. Tons of bait fish everywhere, but no hookups. Went bottom fishing at 3 this am in Edgartown, and the only thing I got was a 4ft sand shark. That thing was jumping out of the water bigtime, and Roland thought I had a decent bass, as did I. Oh well. Ever see a jumping shark??
Then went to Memorial Wharf at 5 and saw 8 albies caught between 15 people and 6 hours. Not very good.
Fisherwoman, family and baitcaster went to the gut and her dad caught 2 Spanish Macks and Joe No pain, 1 albie .
Found a web site for everyone to see the Derby results. Its: www.larrys@larrystackle.com. Nice site.
Also, Huff's picture is displayed inside the weigh station next to his fishing partner, Tommy McAulley, who also passed away. Nice tribute to them. Thanks MV Derby Committee!

Gotta go. John R. Whats the countdown now??

RE:Martha's Vineyard Bass & Bluefish Derby

Mass Bass Kicks A_ _ . The first week tally is pretty good considering that the fishing is spotty at best. We all fished from shore. Fisherwoman got on the board this morning with a 10.8 lb ALBIE . She is leading "All Tackle from Shore" The gang from week one racked up 46 ALBIES, 8 Blues, 7 Stripers, 8 Spanish Mackeral, 4 Fluke and 21 scrawny Squid <img src="http://striped-bass.com/Images/Happy.gif" border="0" align="middle">. Baitcaster is kickin buttsky too. The new crew arrived today.
Most of the Albies are 22 to 24 inches this year. The big blues are coming in from Nantucket waters. Wasque and the gut are producing . Squibnocket is hot for the boat fishermen. Bring on the action!

Hi John, Hurry up and get here. I did save you some fish. Alot of big fish now coming in. Big bass, bones and albies being taken from boats at Squibnocket.
FINALLY, weighed in a albie yesterday, 7.25 and this morning weighed in a 3.30 blue. Life is good!
The troops are here and doing well. They're catching ALOT of under size fish. Not too many being weighed
Gotta go to bed. Up at 3, bottom fishing! Take care
