Yards from diaster
Yesterday I witnessed an act of stupidity so outrageous that I had to share it with all of you. I was visiting my folks over at Prudence; their place overlooks Sandy Hook. As I was watching some boats striper fishing, a coastal tanker was steaming south down the bay for the Atlantic. All of the sudden she started blasting the air horn beep-beep-beep-beep, a warning for a collision. I look ahead of her and some jackass in a 40-foot sailboat was attempting to cut across the steamers bow. The air horn goes off again beep-beep-beep-beep and the fool just keeps on coming in the sailboat. I can hear the steamer now in full reverse. The engine is throbbing and her bow is looming over the sailboat, whose sails are now slack because the tanker had blocked the wind. Thank God the tanker had a great pilot that knew the area cold. As the collision looked imminent the pilot steered the tanker outside the channel. I know for a fact the depth goes from 65-42 feet there he drove her around the idiot and then swerved her back into the channel before hitting the next under water finger. Hats of to the pilot and the Darwin Award to the sailor.

Hi Duke,
We saw three stooges yesterday out on the water in a ski-doo craft as well as a host of others which coincidentally were named to the darwin awards list... it's funny, but I said the same exact thing of some we saw yesterday...
It must have been a moron family reunion on the water!

I worked for a tow company in my youth. A string of 8 barges pushed by the tow-boat. Well a cabin cruiser decided he could cut before the tow and was wrong. The string of barges ran him under, family and all. He was rolled along the bottom. The crew was horrified, praying and swearing for what seemed forever. The cruiser popped up behind the towboat like a cork. Only the antennas were missing. The power of prayer is not to be taken lightly.
