can't go wrong with inexpensive 9' 9wt.it will throw wide variety of flies in most conditions. check ebay or want ads for used setup. if you want to go new and not spend too much look at tfo rods with redington reel. good luck and good fishing!

For a cheap reel check out the Pflueger 1595 & 1/2 The model with the palmable rim. I have caught fish up to 24lbs on that reel. Just be sure and rinse it well after every use. I think a quick dunk in the sink will be the best way to get it completely rinsed. They used to run around 50.00. Bear's den in Taunton used to have used rods so you might try calling them to see if they have any reasonably priced 9ft 9wts. Personally I like a two piece as less ferrules to worry about keeping lined up and you can store it in a reel on rod case for quick setups. One rod that has been getting a lot of postive reviews for the money is the Temple Forks rods. I believe most of those are four piece but worth a look for the $.

That looks like a good value and a great starting package for someone just getting into the sport. You'll probably never have a need to fish without that removable butt though.
