Vacations in the north-east - Striper Talk Striped Bass Fishing, Surfcasting, Boating

Hello !
I live in Brittany, the western coast of France.
Here I fish the European species of bass (a bit smaller than the striper !).
I usually fish using hard surface lurres.

I'll be on vacation from the 8th of august, to the 31th, near Newport, RI (Portsmouth ?), and plan to have a try on sripers.

1 - I don't intend to bring my fishong stuff along, so can you give me a few hints on where to buy a nice outfit (like a 7-feet spinning rod and reel + braided line, and a few hard lurres), which will be cheaper than in Europe ? I visited a few shops in january 2001, but can't remember the names/places. Please respond on my e-mail according to the BB rule.

2 - Where can I find the local regulation on bass fishing (restrictions on places, legal sizes, etc..) ?

3 - Without the intention of robbing people's private secret spots, can anybody tell me about "everybody knows places" where I may fish from the shore (inshore fishing ?) ?

Unfortunately, not only are you coming at a terrible time, there are no stripers anywhere on the island

Any of the local tackle shops should be able to provide you with a nice 7' spinning outfit for a reasonable price. As far as fishing spots go I would ask the tackle shop where you purchase the rod from for some local advice. This is a good time to be fishing our area. Hope you enjoy your stay.

Yes this is a great time to fish here and newport will yield nice bass at that time. Fish points with deep droopoffs and whitewater. Fish at night if you want to find big ones, and if you want really big ones use live eels!

dont waist money on gear, hire a local guide and pay extra if you have to so you can use his gear.
you will be put on fish with the right gear and methods.
look in the sponsor section there are some guides there.
fishing is fun but when you catch fish its a blast , you wont have time to learn great spots so hire a guide

For what you will spend on decent gear, you could hire a guide to put you on fish with excellent tackle.
It takes a long time before you figure this silly game out, you are only here for a short time. Charter a boat or hire a surf guide is my advice, you will have a positive experience.

The above is great advice---I'fished the surf here for 4 years and if I had any brains I'd hire a guide now!!!! But stubborn yankee stock will keep slogging through the suds hoping for that one dumb son of a %@&+*.
Short stay----surf guide is money well spent.Better to go back with photos and memories than excuses.

1. Buy a NOAA chart of Newport

2. Use the S-B search function - search for favorite plugs, eels, surf set-ups.

3. Go to www.maineharbors.com for tide chart based on Castle Hill, Newport, RI and it will also give you moon phases.

4. And before you do anything else.....

BUY A PAIR OF KORKERS!!!! The rocks here are covered with algae and seaweed and are extremely dangerous for the uninitiated if you're not accustomed to them.

I live in Portsmouth and would be more than happy to take you fishing to some of the local spots.Just let me know around the time you're ready to come here.Lots of good places to fish in the area.I live right on the water near several such spots and am obviously within short driving distance of many.

I think this guy is incredible !!!

If you compare stripers to the French sea bass, these fishes are huge !

My "big ones" (just a few...) are around 10 lbs, 30 inches.
Keep in mind that the legal keeper size in France is 15 inches.

Mr Sandman, you're TRUE.
Its title is "limit of the game".
This part of France (Brittany) has seen more shipwrecks than any other, I think... And this place of Brittany ("Raz de Sein") more than the others !!!

Last winter, I thought I reached my own limits (my 50 hp inflatable said "encore", but not me !!!), but I was far below that kind of sea (or was I ???).

I read all of your posts, and consider them seriously, though I'd like to explain further my point of view :
- nice idea to get a guide or a charter, but when I browse the net sites, I notice that the fees are (for me) HIGH !
- I'd rather put 200 bucks in some stuff I can use locally and bring home to use again and again, than have a one-shot experiment, even if it's supposed to be unforgettable (I'm not wise, but my experience tells me that you're NEVER sure you'll have a good fishing session...). And for good discounted stuff, I would even put more money (ooops, my wife is listening !)
- And, as someone said, if I owned a tackle shop, I wouldn't mind giving hints to a customer, who wouldn't stay in the area for a long time ! I would even consider it fair ;-)
