Capt Johns out of Plymouth
Went on a company charter today and boy did it suck. 70 people stuck on one of those Capt John head boats. Everyone was packed in like sardines, plenty of crossed lines, plenty of dog fish. Very very little cod. Stay away from this outfit they couldn't find their a#$ with both hands. A total rip off. 70 fishers for a total of 14 keepers.

Cod fishing in July????? Have a nice day. Sorry you had a bad trip. I have never been on a head boat.....but I can tell you it is not my cup of tea! You would have to pay me to be fishing elbow to elbow with a bunch of yahoos....and pay me well!

Almost time to get our fish on!!!

Total Rip Off ?
I think Capt. John's rate per person is only $35.00 or something close to that, One of the cheapest around by far !!!
Go on Walsh's from Lynn, $ 75.00 a head and most other head boats are about the same price!!!All elbow to elbow and most boats don't allow braided line, (like Power Pro) on the boats because of line tangles
If you want lots of room to fish, you can do a 8 - 10 hr charter boat @ any where from $600-$1200.00 Plus tips for the mates!!!
One other affordable option is a spilt or shared charted on a charter boat (Like RelentlessCharters.com) for $ 150.00 per person plus tips for mate also!!!
How far out did the boat go out to only get 14 fish ?
Not too much cod bieng found in inshore waters in July.

Captain John Boats heve been going out of Plymouth forever. I've fished on them many, many times. The fishing is very seasonal. In the spring and fall they do pretty good fishing inshore but yes, fishing for cod inshore off of Plymouth in the summer can be slow.
They go out to the bank and Cashes in the spring and fall, Those trips usually do pretty good. Don't fault the captain because fishing was slow, thats just the way it is in the middle of the summer, and yes, tangles do happen when 70 guys are fishing. I love fishing on Captain John, its a institution in itself.

I think those boats hold 100+ on the whale watches.
Try the early spring trips to Stellwagon or the overnighter to Cashes Ledge 50 by reservation.
These boats require a lot of patience, most, not all of the bring their own equipment guys, only have half the weight necessaryto stay on the bottom.
The wind blows the tide changes the boat moves all equal tangles.
Too bad you didn't have a good trip, maybe not all the boats fault, possibly inexperenced fishermen contributed.

I've been on CaptJohns a few times and every time I've gone out, I've gotten plenty of Cod.
But you went out in July. Please, that's such a horrible time to go out. Go when it's freezing nuts cold. That's the only time I go Cod fishing. Its better fishing that way.
Don't blame the Captain at all. Cod moves out during warmer weather.

Capt Johns is by far the best of the boats out of Plymouth but as all have said right here...July inshore stinks....
For a good Cod Trip this time of year...call us over at Ave Maria Charters...Six person Max but our Cod Spots are Red Hotttttt this time of year
