Jeep Liberty

Does anyone else own a Jeep Liberty? My wife and I bought one a while back and the transmission does this funky hiccup on the highway at about 60 - 65 mph, it's almost like it wants to downshift but then decides not to.

I talk with someone else who has one and she has had a similar experience.....

You may want to check this site out. there has been numerous government mandated recalls on the liberty. Not sure if there is one about the trany but you can also do a search for defect investigations to see if anyone else has reported the same thing to the National highway traffic safety administration.

"Jeep Liberty"

If you are having trouble with your Jeep, the only one I would take it too, would be LaPola on Cranston Street in Cranston. I have heard more people talk about that Jeep Dealer than anyother dealer in the state. My buddy believes the sun rises and falls on this dealer. He will not buy from any other dealer, he goes all the way back to the Gremlin days with this dealer, and has never had a problem that this dealer could'nt fix.

I take it that you're out of warranty?

Could be a lot of things. On my Grand Cherokee there's a button on the shift to take it out of overdrive, which you would use to keep it from chasing back and forth between top gear and O/D if you were lugging a load up a hill. Could be that.

If you have the same electronically controlled tranny as mine, you could have a solenoid starting to go. Assuming it's a Chrysler tranny the solenoids are likely "legendary" Mopar electrical components

Could be your torque converter. How many miles on it? I can tell you firsthand that a new torque converter for a GC tranny goes about $1250 including labor

PS--check canyondiver's response to this post on Noreast. It's not a "could-be" answer

We had it to the dealer and of course it's "we cannot duplicate the complaint"

A friend told me to comb the internet, often everyone is having the same issue while the mfg. is denying a problem.

And it is still under warranty, for now

Do a google search on "jeep liberty forums" and you'll find many online resources - like this: http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/index.php

I am having a similar problem with my 2002 Durango. It usually happens while on cruise control. Feels like a hiccup, and you can see the tach jump 2-300 rpms. Mostly happens under a load climbing a hill. Taking the OD off does not help, it just happens at a higher rpm. I also get a low rpm tach shuffle around 35-40 mph. I have not yet taken it to the dealer, I am out of warranty.
