Wire Line Jiggin'
Was curious at what depth you guys start to jig with wire? I have done some jigging before but it wasn't my boat, was out on a charter. Do you need wire if your under 10' or is it wire no matter what depth? At what point are you to deep to jig this way? Just want to have my basics covered before I go out with my Dad on his boat. Thanks, Jay

Get as close to the bottom as you can.

The rule is 10ft down for every 100ft of wire out. My reel was spooled with around 400ft wire (too much IMO), it's a work out bringing in a good fish, it's backbreaking when you pull a skate with a hook in its wing. Remember to keep the line tight, wire tangles happen real fast and can last real long.

Wireline is good from under 10 feet to 50 feet, just depends on how much you put out, and how heavy your jigs are.

get it on bottom then adjust speed of boat to keep it just off bottom it's a constant effort watching depth and contour of bottom. I'm no expert still learning myself.
I have some backing then50yds.wire 1yd of dacron 50yds.wire 1yd dacron 50yds wire and a nice length of leader.
REMBER JIG ON THE DACRON JIGGING ON WIRE WILL FATIGUE THE WIRE FAST! later LINK SR.

I catch most of my fish in 30 something. When I get to far over 40 feet I start over.
I have 150 yards wire on my rod. But I have been doing this for a while and I agree with missing link, if you are new you might want to go with the dacron wire set up.

Where I go
If you aren't dragging it on the bottom through the sand, you might as well go home now. 35' of water 300+' of wire and 4-5oz. jigs. It works...
And after a visit to the chiropractor, I'm ready to go again! You know....
Snap!
Ouch! OH,... yeah, that's much better now , Doc!
