Boat Value
I work with a guy who has a 1980 Grady White with a 1979 150 Johnson. He wants to sell the boat and checked with BoatUS to find it's value, they came back with $4027. Now the poor guy thinks that is what he can get.
He claims it runs like an '83, but I told him
1. share the drugs he's on
2. $1500 is a longshot.
Please reply with what you think the value of this boat is, and any wise @ss comments I can pass on would be nice too.
The engine has been rebuilt and does run well.

I tell people to go on boats.com or boattrader.com or usedboats.com and look for a similar boat to get the range to ask in. You get more for a boat up here than sat for example in Newport News, VA. The engine on that boat is worth zero. a trailer if you can get plates for it is $1000 to $2000 Used/Newish.
Note... I could not find a Grady that old on the net.

I think he can get that easily. I'd start at $5,500 in the spring and go from there.
I recently sold a 1973 no name runabout with a 1973 motor and a decent trailer for 2,600. I sold it to the first guy that came to see it. I probably could have gotten more, but I was happy with what I got.
Grady's got a name and a following. This assumes the transom and floor are in good condition.

I don't think that the boat is worth $4000
BUT
I bet he could get $5000 if he was patient.
as they say, one man's trash.....
Gradys have a following, and if the boat looks nice, he might just be able to find a sucker, er ah i mean buyer that is willing to pay that...

I had a 1983 Grady 22 ft seafarer with a 200 Johnson before I bought my new Parker.
The dealer gave me close to 15k for trade in, and I was told they resold it for around 18k

Holy crap my previous boat was a 23' Neptune W/A with an I/O and Load Rite roller trailer that I sold for 15,500 the guy used it one season and put it on the market for 16,500 and has not sold. The boat was like brand new when I sold it. I can't get over what people will pay for a name  |

Same would go for my new Parker!
You don't see too many used ones for sale (especially my 2320)
So when I sell it to get my next boat (a 25 or 28 BHM)
I'll have no problem getting top dollar for it!  |

Sure with prices as high as they are, our boats should catch a good $$$$,
But.
IMO, you won't get it cause there are so many boats on the market, they are a dime a dozen. Look at the broker books..
A buyer will offer you crap for a sweet boat. If he does, he was born yesterday....

Ron we had the same boat, but an '82 Seafearer w/205 OMC on a bracket. The $$ you got for your boat is amazing. In '85 my dad paid $22k, sold in '87 for the same price $22k.

Think about the alternatives for a buyer. There are lots of people looking for a quality hull at a low price that they can repower. Problem is there aren't many alternatives. If the hull is in good condition adding a leftover 150HP can get a great boat for short money. What are the alternatives in that price range?? A used boat/engine package with engine risk. I think you'd find more buyers than you think willing to pay.
