They are fencing off Cliff Walk in Newport

Went to Sachuest Pt last night and it's closed for spraying some types of evil vegetaion. So ok , head down the road ...Ledge road had these pipes in the road at the end. Hmm sure looks like fence posts. No fish by the way.good water.lots o weed - no fish. End up at Kings Park on the harbor and spoke to a few guys..apparently they are closing off Cliff Walk for repairs.Geeze !!! Couldn't have picked a worse time! They said Ruggles Ave is all fenced off too. Looks like we gotta get stealthy /creative this fall. This "gated community" stuff is bs!

Joe,
Heard the surfer dudes already cut a hole in the fencing. You're not going to keep them away from the big sets that are now rolling in. The Cliff Walk is being refurbished - I'm sure enterprising casters will find a way to get in during the dead of night.

If you're thin you can enter Ruggles without cutting...

I can anyways. Joe you probably can too.

Haven't tried Ledge yet but I have a plan for that that doesn't involve cutting.

I'm more concerned about coming back to the road and finding my truck towed.

Cutting it will just anger the ones who are in charge of installing it then u will really have problems.perhaps if someone talked to them a gate or passage way can be left so surfcasters an fisherman can have access.i think they are more worried about the average tourist then guys who climb rocks in the middle of the night.Of course they will probably just dismmiss ur request.

You're right Pete - Joe should be able to squeeze in - it's his bucket that won't make it Have to plug Joe!
Parking restrictions are inevidible if we're not discreet about access.

NIB you're right - cutting is going to really create problems - I hope the authorities don't think the fishermen did it. The surfers around here are hardcore - during hurricane swells they give the cops the finger when the police tell them to get out of the water. The cops just drive away.

This definately needs to be addressed, and as far as towing vehicles, what about these permits we paid for to allow us to park there! Does Mike have any input from the city about this? Hell he is a city employee. Hope we can come up with a favorable solution to this!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've contacted the city to see what can be done about those of you who purchased a permit. I'm looking for a refund and/or credit. Southern area of Cliff Walk (Ruggles to Bailey's) slated to be closed until July 2006. Stay tuned.

I'm going to continue to park as it isn't posted that we can't park there. I would think most cops wouldn't mind; we could simply be going for a walk on the streets NEAR the Walk. If I get towed, I'll be raising hell. They can expect to see me in court since it's almost a guaranteed win.

sea dangles, just get a running start and i'll know you'll fit thru. if nothing else, you'll make it easier for joe to get his bucket thru and tattoo bring his scup rods thru. plus, you'll have a reason to hit the edge for a new jacket.

Dennis & Pete - there was no forewarning on this? Did they put up parking signs? Any other signs?

I believe it is a planned repair of some parts of Cliff Walk by the Army Core of Engineers.

I had heard the rumor that it would be closed, I just didn't expect 14 foot fences with a complete denial of access the day after Labor Day.

There aren't any no parking signs yet (other then what is already there), so for now I'm not going to get too worked up, but I'm definitely concerned.

This has been planned for quite some time - actually a state DOT project. Heavy equipment will be left on site so they don't want too many tourists walking around a construction site - I can understand that.

Areas of the walk that are prone to erosion will get some granite blocks much like what is now in place at northern end of walk from Easton's Beach to Ruggles. The actual walking path will be improved, smoothed out if you will. Not necessarily a good thing as easy walking means easier access but you know - I'm not getting any younger. 20 years ago I'd be bitching about easy access - with improvements I might be able to get to some "long walk spots" when I'm older. But I'm not ready to carry a bucket yet

I've already been in contact with city officials about the permit - maybe refunds or credit toward a new permit when the walk reopens. Again, as soon as I get any info I'll pass it on.

Like Pete said - let this settle out. It might not be that bad. Cutting fences will be the worst thing we can do - don't want to draw any negative attention.

DZ, Is it to late to turn this around and get some bass stands and "Chums" in key locations as part of the design/construction? Who do we need to talk to?
