SAT. night on the water with GS!!!!
Well I told GS back in Feb. after he showed me how to fish the Thames river that he had to come and fish a few of my old favorite spots this spring and we did just that last night. He brought along some of his smoke colored split tail plastics and after a few lessons on how to fish them ( I have not fished plastic in salt all that much ) I now have a new favorite go to lure. We started the night out with me showing Bob the layout of the area and then it was off to the first hole. There was one other boat here but they were trolling tubes+worms and I have always done best pluging this spot. I drove the boat as Bob started to cast his plastic he was on as soon as the bait hit the water. He caught 2 dz or more fish from 4# up to 15#. I could only get 5 herring and wanted to use them at another spot before the tide went slack. We moved and I had a nice keeper size fish on the first herring as soon as it hit the water. Bob tried his luck with plastic and had a few hits but no takers. We put out another herring and had some nice runs but no hook ups, the fish had not moved in here yet as the tide was still off by a few hours. Since the night was young yet we moved back to the first hole and the fish were stacked up there now, it was around 8:00 or so and we never left this spot till 12:45. I do not know how many fish we caught but I would say it was well over 100 with many in the 10# to 14# range. If you have not seen or tried GS hand porred baits give them a try, yes we may have gotten bigger fish on the herring but the fun we had for hour after hour on these plastics and light tackle will be remembered for years to come. Oh by the way we left the fish at 12:45 still smashing bait but we had both had enough of this maddness. I would like to thank Bob for showing me another great way to have fun with Mr Striper.

Thank you Greg, I had a ball, that was just too much fun. My hands look like they have gone through a meat grinder and my elbow and shoulder are sore....it hurts so good . For the record, we were of course using my favorite bait, my 5-1/2 inch split tail in clear glitter belly (the new string hollo glitter) and smoke black glitter top. It's like the american express card for me...I don't leave home without it.
My only regret is that I ran out of gas and couldn't stay for more. You know the fishing has been good when your leaving fish because your too tired to continue, especially when at any one time 25-50 bass are slapping the surface. I'm going to get down again soon, that place is too sweet for words.

People have told me I have a big head, but come on . One more thing I think definately bears comment, is the fact that close to 125 stripers were caught on one 10 count bag of plastics. That even includes 4 bigger fish we broke off between us. That's between a 15-20 fish per bait ratio. That might give some of you a clue why I'm so high on the Owner 90 degree jig hooks, combined with the Hitch Hiker bait holders. That rigging almost never fails and the bait will generally be torn in half before it does. Figure the 5 hooks we might have gone through in the evening, that's about a $0.08 cents per fish cost.

FW what will this cold spell do to the blues? Will we need a few days of warm weather again to get it going? I'm definately pumped to get back down there on the flats to chase those razor lips around.

GS - It's not that you have a big head or anything ...
Glad to here that you two had a nice outing - So Bob, you think that water is as clear as yours?
I want to go but Mo-In-Law is in town for a week so it figures that my knee will get better but my fishing has still gone out the Window ...

John that water isn't as clear as my water, but it's not as murky as Boston Harber either, somewhere in the middle. I've never been worried about using my smoke color anywhere, regardless of water color and it remains my go to color. Even 2 years ago, when I fished all fall in Boston because of the masses of bass in there, I threw that same color. My list of priorities when it comes to plastic would go something like this;
1. Size of the bait
2. Style bait (stick, split-tail, shad, curly tail)
3. Presentation (tempo, speed, location, etc)
4. Depth control (jig head, weightless, solder wrapped hook)
5. Color
6. Scent

GS, I think it will come back around probably around thursday if we get back to some SW or W wind, it should turn them right back on again. But time will tell, just have to go down and make a few casts and see what happens. If we go I will let ya know.
