Getting radar c70 ?

I have made up my mind to get radar and am looking at the Raymarine c70 unit with a 2kw 18" radome antenna. Does anyone have this unit or used it before? I will be setting it up just for radar at first but will most likely add gps and digital sounder after. I realy like the gps/radar overlay so the gps will not be to long after the unit itself. I would like any info you guys may have good or bad about this uint. Thanks GB

I added the 2KW 18" to my E120 at the end of the season. If you buy the C80 the GPS is just a matter of adding the antenna and a Navitronics chip...

The radar worked well picking up the PVC private channel markers in CT where I fish in the fall. Coming in one night I saw 3 marks but when I got close the third one flew off (Swan)

Greg you hit the lottery? First the custom arch now radar. I like it. You should check out the Boston boat show next month to see what's on sale. Maybe we can meet up and have a beer. I mean milk.

I believe it's feb 18 or 19. Lets make a date and all hook up for the show, Goose was talking about going with me. Radar is an awsome thing to have, I wish I could get one, then there is no need to wait for fog to break, just take it slow.

Thanks for the replies. Shawn they said it would be good out to 24nm but I figured 10-12 nm would be at the good end. That is all I realy need so anything past that would be an extra.

I highly doubt you will get 10-12nm you are only in a 21' the radar needs to be up pretty high

Every little bit helps, mine was on top of my Hydra Sports which was a pretty high T top (Link Sr) could walk under without d#^&#^&#^&#^&#^&g, and I don't think I could pick anything up in that range, I can also count on 1 hand the amount of times I changed the setting out of the 1/8 mile range. The C series units are nice just don't buy on range as you would be dissapointed if you bought the 24 mile unit and it is only good for 9 on your boat.

In my best Mr Miaggi voice Ahh Danielson must remember earth is round radar waves go straight :-)

Vector makes a great point...
I rarely run more than 1/2 mile range inshore, and our rader is 20+ft up and can p/u a ways out. Great for picking up squall lines though

FWIW, I put a Furuno 1623 on my 20' CC for about $1000. It, too, has an 18" radome @ 2kw with 5.9 (I think) degree beam, about 11' in the air on the T-top. It works great and saved my bacon one night last summer coming home at 3 am in the soup.

I wish it was a 6 kw 1.2 degree unit, so that I could spot birds and count the boys and the girls. But I didn't have a spare $7500 to throw at it.

Thanks again for the replies. I did get the c70 this week with a nav. card so I can play with it till spring comes along at last. With the card I can put all my routes in and all my waypoints. I love the layover of the radar over the chart. FW how does the radar/chart layover work out? I have read that if you do not get a fluxcompass that is is off by a bit?

GB, We have not tried the lay over yet. I think it is a great feature. I can tell you that the radar is very accurate as I can pick up lobster pots in the fog ahead of me with out a problem, We should have used the layover comming back one day from tuna fishing out 35 miles as we hit a huge thunderstorm on the way back, didn't really matter all that much as we were surrounded by the storm, but might have been better to navigate with the layover though with weather conditions.
