Thumbs up Huge Stripers on the Kennebec River

We are catching 20-30lb fish every day on top water baits. The blueback herring and shad run is in full swing up here and we have the stripers to prove it. Large spwning females are filling up on the herring right now and making them quite easy to catch. Every trip out we're hooking into stripers in the 40 lb range. If anyone is interested in fishing part of the heaviest concentration of big fish in the North East....come up to Maine and hit the Kennebec. I suggest you give John Reynolds a call @ 207-445-5640. Or, check him out on Maine Guides Online under MEADOWBROOK GUIDE SERVICE. This guy really knows his stuff. Even if you only get a chance to talk to him about the stripers... I strongly encourage it.

BG - welcome to Striped-Bass... Always good to have a few more Maine types around here.

Couple things, as noted in the registration page, "advertisements,....solicitations, or any other method to promote without clearing it with striped-bass.com first is inappropriate on these message boards." It costs me a lot of money to run these boards and keep the lights on and to help defray those costs, I do have sponsors that support these pages. In fairness to them, I don't allow major promoting of non-sponsors like in your first 2 posts. If I were a rich philanthropist , it might be a little different. So please refrain from the promotion of other guides...

We do have a great crew here and I think you would like it here too...

Second thing:

Seeing that the migratory fish have already spawned, are these "Local, resident" fat fish spawning now in the Kennebec? If they are, I hope they're being released alive to continue their spwan... OR just fat fish that spawned in a more southern state?

Backwater Guide

Hey John,

Sorry about the promo....just didn't want people to miss out on a good thing. As far as the female stripers go...yes they have been spawning and that is why we have special catch and release, artificial lures only with one hook regulations right now to protect these fish. We have a very valuable resource here in Maine and DMR is doing a great job with these regulations to preserve it.
Thnks for the reply!

Thumbs up

That's great news after all the various controversies that came up this spring re: fish in the southern states. Between pollution, loop holes, and lack of enforcement, everytime we turned around there was a negative story surrounding big spawners in NC, the Chesapeake and the Hudson R.

A little far for me to take my boat, but I'm sure some of those fish find there way into the Harbor.
